Storyline
During British rule in India, a man sends his young son to a remote village to become a celibate monk, hoping this will make up for the deaths of his other children. The boy lives with a strict teacher, whose daughter becomes pregnant while he is away. The village turns against the teacher and his daughter for breaking the traditional rules of widowhood.
