Trivia

  • The film's title 'Neelira' is the Tamil word for 'blue', a colour often associated with the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) uniforms during the Sri Lankan Civil War.
  • Director Someetharan is known for his grounded, humanistic portrayals of the Sri Lankan conflict, having previously explored it in films like 'Komaali Kings'.
  • The entire story unfolds over a single night, creating a tense, real-time thriller set almost entirely within one house.
  • To achieve authentic 1988 period details, the production meticulously recreated household items, clothing, and even vehicle models from that era in Sri Lanka.
  • The film examines the complex and often controversial role of the Indian Army (IPKF) in the Sri Lankan conflict from a civilian, ground-level perspective.
  • It blends the intimate drama of a family wedding with the large-scale genre of a war thriller, a rare combination in Tamil cinema.
  • The cinematography by Theni Eswar is noted for using shadows and confined spaces to heighten the feeling of claustrophobia and suspense.
