AR Rahman is an Indian film composer, record producer, playback singer and music-institution founder whose film career began with Mani Ratnam's Tamil-language Roja in 1992 and has continued without interruption into the 2020s. The catalogue is now over 150 features across Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, English and Mandarin productions and runs from mainstream commercial cinema through art-cinema scores into international stage musicals, Hollywood features and standalone solo albums; the Vande Mataram album of 1997, released around the fiftieth anniversary of Indian independence, is among the best-selling Indian non-film albums on record.

The public profile rests on a small set of partnerships and a small set of awards. The partnerships: Mani Ratnam continuously since Roja, Shankar from Kadhalan (1994) through 2.0 (2018), Imtiaz Ali across Rockstar (2011), Highway (2014) and Tamasha (2015), Ashutosh Gowariker across Lagaan (2001), Swades (2004) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008). The awards: six National Film Awards in India, the Padma Shri in 2000, the Padma Bhushan in 2010, two Academy Awards at the 81st ceremony in February 2009 — Best Original Score and Best Original Song for 'Jai Ho' with Gulzar's lyrics — two Grammy Awards in 2010, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. Rahman remains the only Indian composer to have won at the Oscars and the Grammys, and the wins are now nearly two decades old; what has happened to his catalogue since is the more interesting analytic question.

The biographical line is well-known. Rahman was born to RK Shekhar, a Malayalam-cinema composer-conductor who worked across the Tamil and Malayalam industries, and Kareema Begum (then Kasturi); after Shekhar's death when Rahman was nine, the family ran a music-equipment business that put a young Dileep into the Madras session-musician circuit as a keyboardist. Through his teens he played for Ilaiyaraaja and MS Viswanathan among others; in his early twenties he converted to Islam, took the name Rahman, and built Panchathan Record Inn — a small home studio in Kodambakkam that would, over the following decade, become one of the most technically advanced film-music recording rooms in Asia.

The pre-film period that mattered, however, was the advertising-jingles work. Rahman scored hundreds of commercials through the late 1980s and early 1990s, and the consistently cited Cannes Lions credit — repeated in profile pieces but not always primary-sourced — belongs to this period. The jingles work shaped two things that would define his film method: a habit of treating each track as a self-contained production with its own sound design, and a comfort with non-mainstream playback voices selected for timbre rather than star value.

Mani Ratnam, then preparing the Tamil-language Roja, heard the jingles and offered Rahman the score over the more obvious continuation with Ilaiyaraaja. The choice broke the convention that a director would stay with a single composer across a phase, and the resulting album won Rahman the National Film Award for Best Music Direction at his first attempt — a record at the time. The Hindi-dubbed release the following year carried the score into the national market and began the larger reset.

Rahman has scored every Mani Ratnam directorial since Roja. The list runs through Bombay (1995), Iruvar (1997), Dil Se (1998), Alaipayuthey (2000), Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), Yuva and the Tamil Aayitha Ezhuthu (2004), Guru (2007), the simultaneously-shot Hindi Raavan and Tamil Raavanan (2010), Kadal (2013), O Kadhal Kanmani (2015), Kaatru Veliyidai (2017), Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018), the two-part Ponniyin Selvan (2022 and 2023), and Thug Life (2025). The thirty-three-year continuity has no comparable equivalent in Indian cinema as a single composer-director relationship at this output and visibility.

It is also the partnership where Rahman has done his most experimental writing. Bombay (1995) is the clearest case: the wordless 'Bombay Theme' — a flute-and-strings minimalism set against a tabla pulse — is one of the most concentrated examples of an Indian composer using the score, rather than the song-list, as the film's emotional argument. Iruvar (1997), the fictionalised MGR-Karunanidhi political biopic, used Carnatic and Hindustani classical forms — including a Hariharan-led 'Narumugaiye' that sits closer to a concert raga elaboration than to a film song — and anticipated the long-form classical writing of Ponniyin Selvan two decades later. Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), the Sri Lankan civil-war drama, gave Rahman a small ensemble and a child-protagonist register; the 'Vellai Pookal' choir against a sparse orchestral bed is one of the most economical pieces of Indian film scoring of the 2000s. Raavanan (2010) used qawwali-against-percussion, most audibly in 'Behne De', to carry the film's antagonist-hero ambivalence. Ponniyin Selvan I (2022) returned Rahman to long-form orchestral writing for a Chola-period epic, and the press around the release explicitly framed the reunion as the closing of a circle from Roja.

The other major Tamil partnership is with Shankar, whose spectacle filmography depends on Rahman in the same way Mani Ratnam's filmography does, but in a sonically opposite register. Beginning with Kadhalan (1994) and Indian (1996) and running through Jeans (1998), Boys (2003), Sivaji (2007), Enthiran/Robot (2010), I (2015) and 2.0 (2018), the Shankar partnership has produced some of the commercially largest Tamil albums of the post-1992 period.

Where the Mani Ratnam scores are characterised by restraint, the Shankar scores are characterised by sonic maximalism: layered electronic production, large vocal ensembles, set-piece dance numbers built for the director's choreography-as-spectacle staging. 'Mukkala Muqabla' from Kadhalan was an early demonstration of the maximalist Rahman idiom, and the Sivaji and Enthiran soundtracks pushed the production budget and the layering further. The Shankar work is sometimes treated by Rahman partisans as the lesser side of the catalogue against the Mani Ratnam scores; the more honest accounting is that the two partnerships together cover the full range of Rahman's idiom — chamber-scale and stadium-scale within the same composer's hand — and that you cannot understand the first without the second.

Rahman's Hindi career began with Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela (1995), and the soundtrack landed in a Bollywood market that had spent three years arguing about whether the Roja sound could survive the move north. It could. 'Tanha Tanha' and 'Hai Rama' in Asha Bhosle's voice translated the Tamil idiom into a recognisably Hindi-pop register; Subhash Ghai's Taal (1999) extended the project; Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan (2001) — Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and the project that established Rahman's name in international film circles — gave him an ensemble-cinema premise where the score had to do crowd-scene and intimate work in the same album.

The Imtiaz Ali phase from Rockstar (2011) onward is the most analysed late-Hindi run. Rockstar's Sufi-rock fusion — the Mohit Chauhan vocal carrying 'Jo Bhi Main' and 'Sadda Haq' against a guitar-and-tabla bed — sits inside a longer Rahman habit of pulling Sufi devotional vocal idioms into pop-rock production grammar, a habit traceable back to 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' on Dil Se (1998), where Sukhwinder Singh's voice and a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan-influenced melodic shape moved against an electronic-percussion bed. The Hindi catalogue across this period also includes Saathiya (2002), Swades (2004) with the Gowariker reunion, Rang De Basanti (2006), Jodhaa Akbar (2008), Delhi-6 (2009), Highway (2014) and Tamasha (2015). 'Tu Hi Re' from Bombay (1995, Hindi dub), 'Chaiyya Chaiyya', 'Jiya Jale' from Dil Se, 'Mitwa' from Lagaan and the Rockstar songs became the international shorthand for what Indian film music sounded like in the post-Rahman era.

Andrew Lloyd Webber commissioned Rahman to compose Bombay Dreams, a stage musical with a Bollywood frame, in the late 1990s; it opened in London's West End in 2002 and on Broadway in 2004. 'Shakalaka Baby' was the most-circulated track. The commission was the first time a sitting British or American mainstream stage producer had handed an Indian film composer a full musical score, and it broadened Rahman's working register beyond cinema.

The larger international moment was Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire (2008), for which Rahman composed the score and the song 'Jai Ho' with Gulzar's Hindi lyrics. At the 81st Academy Awards in February 2009, Rahman won two Oscars — Best Original Score and Best Original Song — becoming the first Indian composer to win in either category. The same body of work won two Grammys in 2010 (Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for Visual Media), a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA. The wins repositioned Rahman from leading Indian film composer to a global film-music figure and led directly to the Hollywood scores that followed: Boyle's 127 Hours (2010), Million Dollar Arm (2014), Pelé: Birth of a Legend (2016), and a string of smaller projects. The 127 Hours score, in particular, sits closer to ambient-orchestral film scoring than to Indian film music, and is the strongest evidence that Rahman's score-only writing has its own grammar separable from his song work.

Strip the catalogue to its grammar and four practices recur. The first is layered, long-timeline production: Rahman records vocal and instrumental tracks separately in his own studio over months, layering electronic textures (synth pads, programmed percussion, processed strings) under acoustic instrumentation (bansuri, sitar, sarangi, tabla, classical guitar, full orchestra). The grammar is closer to a hip-hop or contemporary R&B producer's session work than to the live-orchestra tradition of pre-1992 Indian film music, and the scale of the time-investment is one of the things that makes the Rahman sound difficult to imitate.

The second is the Sufi-devotional vocal idiom — qawwali phrasing, the long-line melismatic style — used as a recurring melodic source. 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja' from Jodhaa Akbar, sung by Rahman himself, is the cleanest example; 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' is the most-circulated; 'Kun Faya Kun' from Rockstar carries the practice into the 2010s. The lineage is partly Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, partly Bulleh Shah-via-Sukhwinder, partly Rahman's own post-conversion engagement with Sufi practice.

The third is Carnatic and Hindustani classical raga used at the structural level rather than as ornament — most legible in Iruvar, Kannathil Muthamittal and the Ponniyin Selvan films.

The fourth is the ensemble vocal casting. Rahman from Roja onward built a generation of playback voices that became identified with his soundworld: Minmini's career-launching vocal on 'Chinna Chinna Aasai', Hariharan's continuous Carnatic-pop work across the catalogue, KS Chithra and Sadhana Sargam carrying the female lead, Sukhwinder Singh as the principal Sufi voice, Naresh Iyer arriving in the mid-2000s, the contemporary roster of Karthik, Chinmayi, Shreya Ghoshal and Vijay Yesudas, and Rahman himself as a singer (Vande Mataram, 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja', 'Kun Faya Kun'). The pattern of a different and sometimes unconventional voice for each song — instead of a small pool of established playback stars — is the most-imitated part of the method. KS Chithra's continuity from the Ilaiyaraaja era into the Rahman era is itself a useful counter to any clean break narrative.

Indian film-music conversation routinely conflates the song-list with the BGM. Rahman's catalogue is one of the cleanest cases for separating them. The Bombay Theme (1995) is a wordless score-statement that does the entire film's emotional argument outside any of the soundtrack songs. Iruvar (1997) embeds extended raga elaborations as score-passages. Kannathil Muthamittal (2002) uses a sparser orchestral bed than the songs would suggest. The 127 Hours score (2010) is essentially a score-only album, with the song 'If I Rise' as a coda; the writing is closer to ambient-orchestral than to anything in the Indian-cinema soundtrack tradition. Slumdog Millionaire (2008) is half a score and half a curated soundtrack, and the score-half — the recurring 'Latika's Theme' motif, the chase cues — is what won Rahman the Best Original Score Oscar.

The analytic point is that the Rahman score has its own grammar. It uses motif more rigorously than the songs do, leans on long-line minimalism, and is more comfortable with negative space than the album-side of the same project would suggest. Any serious account of his work has to treat the BGM as a parallel body of work rather than as link-music between the songs the marketing department actually sells.

The catalogue can also be read as the most consequential expansion of the Indian playback ensemble since the SP Balasubrahmanyam era. Rahman's casting choices in the early 1990s — Minmini on 'Chinna Chinna Aasai', a then-unknown Hariharan moving from ghazal into film, an early Sukhwinder Singh — were a deliberate break from the established A-list pool. The post-2000 expansion brought in Naresh Iyer, Karthik, Chinmayi, Vijay Yesudas, Benny Dayal, Shreya Ghoshal, and a steady rotation of voices recruited from his own KM Music Conservatory. KS Chithra's continuity bridges the Ilaiyaraaja and Rahman eras; SP Balasubrahmanyam's death in September 2020 closed an era for both composers and is the implicit backdrop to a number of Rahman's post-2020 releases.

The casting practice has substantive consequences. Each Rahman album is, in effect, a small repertory company assembled for the project, and the resulting timbral variety — a Hariharan opener, a Sukhwinder middle, a Rahman-himself ballad, a Chinmayi closer — is one of the things that makes the listening experience feel less like a star-vehicle and more like a curated playlist with a single producer's hand audible across the cuts. The method has been widely imitated by post-Rahman Tamil composers but only partially absorbed by the Hindi mainstream, where the star-playback model has historically been more entrenched.

Rahman founded the KM Music Conservatory in Chennai in 2008, named for his late mother Kareema Begum. The institution offered Western and Hindustani classical curricula at undergraduate and diploma levels and was the first of its kind in South India. The pedagogical project has expanded into masterclasses, talent searches, and a steady recruitment pipeline from the conservatory into Rahman's own studio band; KM Music graduates appear across the post-2010 catalogue.

The 2019-2021 Tamil-Hindi feature 99 Songs, which Rahman wrote, produced and scored, was the most direct expression of the pedagogical project as cinema. The film is structured around a young composer's formation, used several KM Music musicians, and worked as a kind of policy statement about what musical seriousness inside the film system should look like. The reception was mixed — the script was widely judged thinner than the music — but the project remains the clearest evidence of Rahman positioning himself across his career as an author-figure: a composer with a studio, a school, a publishing arm, and a public posture of cultural responsibility that earlier Indian film composers, working strictly inside the producer system, were not in a position to take. The Padma Bhushan citation in 2010 specifically acknowledged this broader cultural role alongside the film catalogue.

Rahman's reception has moved through three distinct phases. The first, 1992 to roughly 2008, was a long ascending arc in which the Tamil and Hindi mainstream press, the international film press after Lagaan, and the post-Slumdog global film-music conversation collectively treated him as the defining Indian composer of his generation. The second, the Slumdog and immediate post-Slumdog years, was a moment of unusual international visibility — two Oscars, two Grammys, a steady run of Hollywood commissions.

The third phase, beginning roughly with Rockstar (2011), is the more analytically interesting one. A serious strand in the critical conversation, audible in Film Companion long-form pieces by Baradwaj Rangan and others and in the Hindi music-criticism press, has argued that the Hindi work since Rockstar has been uneven — some albums (Highway, Tamasha) holding the standard, others (a number of the late-2010s Hindi releases, Atrangi Re in 2021) judged thinner than the back catalogue would lead one to expect. The Tamil work, on the same critical reading, has remained more consistent: the Mani Ratnam scores from Kaatru Veliyidai through Ponniyin Selvan and Thug Life have been received as serious work, and the Shankar finale 2.0 was a commercial event regardless of its musical reception.

The partisan argument with Ilaiyaraaja loyalists — a generational and cultural-political fault line in Tamil conversation — has hardened with time rather than softened, and is now part of the texture of any Tamil-cinema music discussion rather than a debate with a settlement in view. The honest account is that Rahman's catalogue is uneven inside any one decade and serious across the full thirty-three years; the binaries are less useful than the films.

A first listener can use a small set of films as anchors. Roja (1992) for the debut and the studio reset; Bombay (1995) for the wordless theme as score-statement; Iruvar (1997) for the Carnatic-classical writing inside a Mani Ratnam frame; Dil Se (1998) and Lagaan (2001) for the Hindi conquest; Kannathil Muthamittal (2002) for the chamber-scale Mani Ratnam late work; Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and 127 Hours (2010) for the Hollywood score-grammar; Rockstar (2011) for the Imtiaz Ali Sufi-rock period; Enthiran (2010) for the Shankar spectacle scale; and Ponniyin Selvan I (2022) for the thirty-year Mani Ratnam reunion and the late long-form orchestral work. Ilaiyaraaja is a Tamil film composer, conductor, songwriter and singer whose working life as a film composer began with Annakkili in 1976 and has continued without a real pause into the 2020s. Estimates of his completed film count vary because no one has ever fully audited it; the most commonly repeated number is 1,500, while more conservative discographies put the figure between 1,000 and 1,300. Either number is without parallel in world cinema, and even the conservative figure folds in major bodies of work in five languages. The bulk of the catalogue is Tamil, with substantial Telugu and Malayalam careers that on their own would be enough to define a composer, a Kannada catalogue that begins with Mani Ratnam's debut Pallavi Anu Pallavi in 1983, and a Hindi catalogue that runs from Mahesh Bhatt's Sadma in 1983 to Balki's Cheeni Kum in 2007 and Paa in 2009.

What distinguishes him from peers is not only the volume but the breadth of compositional method on display inside the catalogue. He is the composer of the Tamil New Wave, of K Viswanath's Telugu Carnatic-cinema cycle, of Mani Ratnam's first decade, and of two non-film concept albums, How To Name It? and Nothing But Wind, that argue for him as a serious twentieth-century Indian composer outside the cinema entirely. He is a Padma Vibhushan recipient and, since July 2022, a nominated Member of the Rajya Sabha — the first film composer in that chamber. The institutional acknowledgements are real but slightly beside the point: the more useful frame is that for any Tamil-speaking listener born after 1965, Ilaiyaraaja's score is the involuntary harmonic memory of childhood.

Ilaiyaraaja's musical formation is unusual because it began outside both the conservatory and the film studio. His half-brother Pavalar Varadarajan ran a travelling stage troupe that performed leftist-inflected songs across the Tamil Nadu village circuit in the 1950s and 1960s, and Ilaiyaraaja entered the troupe as a child accompanist on harmonium and guitar. The repertoire was folk — parai-percussion idioms, agrarian work-song scales, the modal melodies of southern Tamil Nadu's village ritual — and the apprenticeship gave him an internalised sense of which rhythmic patterns and which melodic intervals an unschooled rural audience actually responds to. That ear is the ground floor of every later score.

The upper floor was Western theory. Ilaiyaraaja pursued formal training in Western classical harmony, orchestration and counterpoint through programmes available in 1970s Madras, and accounts in his own interviews and in profile pieces consistently associate this with Trinity College of Music's Indian arrangements; the precise institutional details are sometimes garbled in retellings, but the substantive fact — that he learned orchestration from the inside before scoring his first film — is uncontested.

The break came when Bharathiraja, preparing his own debut Annakkili (1976), needed a composer who could write village melody without the Madras studio's habitual prettifying. Ilaiyaraaja's score used acoustic stringed instruments, a folk percussion bed of thavil and parai, and melodic lines drawn straight from the agrarian repertoire. Within eighteen months of Annakkili he was the most-booked composer in Madras.

The first decade is best read as a single project undertaken with three directors who had decided, in parallel, to take the camera out of MGR's studio set and into actual locations. Bharathiraja's 16 Vayathinile (1977), Sigappu Rojakkal (1978) and the broader run through the early 1980s gave Ilaiyaraaja the village scene and the urban-pulp scene as two distinct sonic vocabularies. Mahendran's Mullum Malarum (1978), Uthiripookkal (1979) and Nenjathai Killathe (1980) gave him a more interior canvas, where the score had to track psychological motion rather than narrative event. Balu Mahendra's Moodu Pani (1980) and Nizhalgal (1980) sat between the two: location-shot, psychologically interior, often nocturnal.

The technical choices are legible in any of these scores. Mullum Malarum opens its songs with a single acoustic-guitar figure under a flute melody that would, in a Hindi 1970s score, have been carried by violins and accordion; the absence of the usual studio orchestra is the point. Nizhalgal moves between Carnatic-derived raga melody and a synthesised pad layer that, in 1980, very few Indian composers were comfortable using as a primary texture. Across the period the playback ensemble — SP Balasubrahmanyam, KJ Yesudas, S Janaki, P Susheela, Malaysia Vasudevan, and a young KS Chithra arriving at the end of the run — became, in effect, the chamber group for which Ilaiyaraaja was writing. SPB in particular develops, over hundreds of Ilaiyaraaja songs, the lower-register chest voice that his Hindi work never required of him; Janaki's collaborations include some of the most technically demanding female playback writing of the period.

Mani Ratnam's Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983), the Kannada-language debut, had been an introduction made through Balu Mahendra; Ilaiyaraaja worked at a discounted rate. The serious collaboration began three years later with Mouna Ragam (1986) and ran ten films across five years, ending with Thalapathi (1991). The body of work this produced is the densest single composer-director archive in Tamil cinema's modern phase.

Mouna Ragam is the score that should be played to anyone who still uses the phrase 'background music' as if it were filler. The film's BGM operates as a sustained character-thought: the recurring piano-and-string motif that follows Divya through the film does the analytic work that the screenplay deliberately leaves underwritten, and the song 'Mandram Vandha' uses SPB's restraint and the orchestral arrangement's hesitation to carry the emotional argument the dialogue cannot. Nayakan (1987), the Velu Naicker biographical, uses a Sicilian-tinged melodic palette under Carnatic-grounded songs; the BGM cue that returns through the film's death sequences is one of the most economical pieces of dramatic scoring in Indian cinema. Geethanjali (1989), the Telugu-language entry in the cycle, gave Ilaiyaraaja a romantic register that the Tamil films had not asked of him. Anjali (1990) folded a children's-melody motif into a full orchestral score. Thalapathi (1991) closed the partnership with a Karna-archetype score whose 'Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu' set the public-festival template for two decades of Tamil cinema after it. When Mani Ratnam moved to Rahman for Roja (1992), the break was framed in the press as a clean generational handover; the more accurate reading is that one mainstream sound was being replaced by another, and the partisans on both sides have not stopped arguing since.

Ilaiyaraaja's collaboration with Kamal Haasan as actor and producer is one of the longest single-actor working relationships in Indian film music, running from K Balachander's Salangai Oli (1983) and K Viswanath's Sindhu Bhairavi (1985) into Punnagai Mannan (1986), Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989), Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990) and Thevar Magan (1992), and then resurfacing in Kamal Haasan's late-career auteur productions: Hey Ram (2000), Virumaandi (2004), Vishwaroopam (2013), Vishwaroopam 2 (2018) and Indian 2 (2024).

This is also the corner of the catalogue where Ilaiyaraaja's Carnatic literacy is most legible. Sindhu Bhairavi, a film whose subject is Carnatic concert performance, asks the score to function as both diegetic music — the ragas a concert vocalist would actually sing — and as the film's emotional structure. Ilaiyaraaja's response uses raga Sindhu Bhairavi itself as the recurring melodic source and stages 'Padariyen Padippariyen' as a near-unornamented vocal line under sparse orchestration, a choice that lets the raga do the dramatic work. Punnagai Mannan opens with the now-canonical flute motif that returns across the film in different orchestrations; Salangai Oli uses the dance form as a structural premise. Hey Ram (2000) is the most ambitious of the late entries — a score that uses tabla and shenai inside a long-form orchestral frame to hold a narrative that moves between Madras, Calcutta and the Partition. Virumaandi pulls in raw folk percussion and parai-led arrangements that connect back to the Bharathiraja era. The Kamal Haasan run is also the analytic answer to anyone who claims Ilaiyaraaja's Carnatic credentials are exaggerated: the scores are the evidence.

The non-Tamil career is a second composer's career inside the same person. The Telugu work begins with K Viswanath's Saagara Sangamam (1983) and continues through Swathi Muthyam (1986) and Swarnakamalam (1988) — the Carnatic-cinema trilogy that, alongside Sindhu Bhairavi, established Ilaiyaraaja as the cinema composer who could carry classical-music subject matter without diluting it. The Singeetam Srinivasa Rao collaborations and Mani Ratnam's Geethanjali (1989) belong to the same Telugu cycle, and the broader Telugu mainstream of the 1980s and early 1990s carried hundreds more Ilaiyaraaja credits.

The Malayalam catalogue is built around the Bharathan-Padmarajan-Mohan generation. Thoovanathumbikal (1987), Padmarajan's monsoon-romance, uses a flute-led motif and a sparse string arrangement that shaped the Malayalam art-mainstream sound for a decade; Nakhakshathangal (1986) demonstrated how a folk melodic source could carry a literary-historical script. The Kannada catalogue is smaller but begins with Mani Ratnam's Pallavi Anu Pallavi and includes a string of mainstream entries through the 1980s.

The Hindi catalogue is the most uneven of the four, partly because it was always commissioned around specific director relationships rather than as a sustained presence. Mahesh Bhatt's Sadma (1983), with its 'Surmayi Akhiyon Mein' rendered by KJ Yesudas, is the canonical entry; Cheeni Kum (2007) and Paa (2009), both directed by R Balki, are the late returns. The Hindi audience never quite absorbed Ilaiyaraaja the way the South did, and the asymmetry is itself part of the cultural-political fault line that separates Tamil film-music partisanship from the national pop conversation.

Reduce the discography to its grammar and four practices recur. The first is the use of South Indian folk modes — parai and urumi percussion, agrarian melodic lines, oral-tradition rhythmic phrasing — as the harmonic and rhythmic floor underneath even the most ornate orchestral writing. 'Aathadi Aathadi' from Kadalora Kavithaigal (1986) is essentially a folk-percussion song with a string overlay; the Annakkili songs are folk almost without intervention.

The second is the Carnatic discipline, which is most legible in the K Viswanath-Kamal Haasan films but is ambient across the catalogue: the gamaka-aware vocal writing, the raga choices that shape an entire song's melodic vocabulary rather than ornament it. The third is Western counterpoint, which Ilaiyaraaja deploys at the bar level — countermelodies that move against the vocal line in ways that recall the Bach chorale rather than the Hindi film-orchestra arrangement. Listen to the bass line under almost any 1980s SPB-led Ilaiyaraaja song and the contrapuntal logic is audible: the bass is doing its own melodic work, not merely outlining the chord.

The fourth is the synthesiser, deployed alongside the acoustic ensemble rather than instead of it; Nizhalgal and Mouna Ragam both use synth pads as a textural layer while the foreground stays acoustic.

The fifth practice — harder to systematise but essential to his reputation — is BGM as continuous compositional argument. Mouna Ragam, Anjali, Thalapathi and Nayakan all use background score as a parallel character voice, returning to motifs across an entire film and developing them in a way that anticipates the symphonic-score grammar Hollywood would only fully internalise in the John Williams era. In a Tamil cinema that historically treated BGM as link-music between songs, Ilaiyaraaja's score-as-dramaturgy was a structural change.

The other way to read the catalogue is as a four-decade study of the playback ensemble Ilaiyaraaja effectively trained. SP Balasubrahmanyam was the principal male voice of the project from the late 1970s until SPB's death in September 2020 — a 40-year working partnership that produced songs in the high hundreds and that is, by any reasonable accounting, the most extensive composer-singer relationship in world film music. SPB's range was elastic enough that Ilaiyaraaja could write across registers without changing voice; the gravelly low-register characterisations in the Punnagai Mannan-era songs and the soft head-voice ornaments in the Mouna Ragam ballads are both SPB at his most flexible.

KJ Yesudas, brought in for the Carnatic-leaning songs, gave Ilaiyaraaja a different instrument — a baritone with classical training and a vocal control that allowed the long-line melismatic phrasing the K Viswanath cycle required. S Janaki, the principal female voice across the 1980s, can hold ornament-heavy Carnatic lines and full-folk delivery within a single album; her work on Mouna Ragam, Sindhu Bhairavi and dozens of other films is some of the most technically demanding female playback writing of the period. P Susheela carried the older, more ornamented register; KS Chithra arrived at the end of the 1980s and quickly moved into the Mani Ratnam-era romantic ballads. Malaysia Vasudevan handled the rougher village-character songs; Mano carried the SPB-adjacent material. The ensemble is a composer's instrument in the way the Vienna Philharmonic was a Mahler instrument: not interchangeable, but architected. SPB's death closed an era, and Ilaiyaraaja's first major release after September 2020 — Viduthalai I (2023) — works partly as a meditation on what is left after the principal voice goes.

Two non-film albums anchor any case for Ilaiyaraaja as a composer outside cinema. How To Name It? (1986) is a fusion suite dedicated to Tyagaraja and Johann Sebastian Bach, and the dedication is not decorative. The album sets Carnatic raga structures against Bach partita and fugue textures, sometimes movement-by-movement, sometimes in direct contrapuntal layering. The conceit — that the Tyagaraja krithi and the Bach chorale are dialects of the same compositional impulse — was, in 1986, a serious claim from a working film composer, and the album was treated as such by a small circle of musicologists.

Nothing But Wind (1988), with Hariprasad Chaurasia on bansuri and a fifty-piece orchestra, takes a different conceit: that wind, as a natural phenomenon, is the underlying form of all music. The album-length work moves through long-form orchestral writing organised around Chaurasia's flute lines, and although the conceptual frame can be read as overstated, the writing itself is sustained and serious. Together the two albums are the primary evidence in any argument that Ilaiyaraaja belongs in the conversation with Indian twentieth-century classical and crossover composers — Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan, Pandit Jasraj — rather than only with film composers. They have been reissued repeatedly and remain the explicit reference points for the orchestral writing in his late-career film scores.

The Roja transition (1992) is not the moment Ilaiyaraaja's career ended — he kept scoring films at a pace most composers would consider a full output — but it is the moment his cultural ubiquity contracted. Mani Ratnam moved to AR Rahman for Roja and never looked back. Shankar arrived as a director with Rahman as his composer. The new generation of Tamil directors who came up in the 1990s mostly took Rahman or one of the post-Rahman composers as a default. By the late 1990s, Ilaiyaraaja's mainstream visibility had shrunk to a smaller set of director relationships — Bharathiraja's continuing work, Kamal Haasan's productions, and a long Malayalam tail.

The partisan argument that hardened during this period — Ilaiyaraaja or Rahman, the village or the synthesiser, the contrapuntal score or the layered production — is one of the durable fault lines in Tamil cultural conversation, and it has political and generational dimensions that go beyond music. The argument is also slightly false in its premises: the two composers' grammars are different but not opposed, and the catalogues overlap less than the partisans claim. What is true is that the 1990s and 2000s mainstream chose Rahman, and Ilaiyaraaja spent two decades writing into a smaller room. A parallel set of disputes around copyright over his back catalogue — battles with film producers and music labels over the rights to his 1980s and 1990s work — added an institutional bitterness to the period, and a number of the disputes remain active.

The post-2010 work is best read as a sustained creative resurgence rather than an honorific late phase. Bala's Tharai Thappattai (2016), built around the parai folk-percussion tradition, gave Ilaiyaraaja a film whose entire premise was the kind of folk vocabulary he had spent forty years digesting; the score works as a return to first principles. Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam (2013), Vishwaroopam 2 (2018) and Indian 2 (2024) extended the actor-composer relationship into its fifth decade.

The most consequential late commission, however, has come from Vetrimaaran. Viduthalai I (2023) and Viduthalai II (2024), the two-part political thriller about Tamil Nadu's Emergency-era state violence, gave Ilaiyaraaja a director whose realist instincts asked the score to do exactly the kind of sustained background-music argument Mouna Ragam had asked of him in 1986. The Viduthalai I score, his first major release after SPB's September 2020 death, was received as evidence that the late-career writing remained on the level of the 1980s peak; Viduthalai II confirmed the assessment. For a generation of viewers whose Tamil-cinema baseline was the Anirudh Ravichander pop-score era, the Vetrimaaran scores reintroduced what a composer-as-author actually sounds like.

The institutional acknowledgements have arrived in the same period. Padma Bhushan in 2010, Sangeet Natak Akademi in the 2010s, Padma Vibhushan in 2018, an honorary doctorate from Gandhigram Rural Institute in November 2022, and a Rajya Sabha nomination in July 2022 — the last making him the first film composer to sit in the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He continues to release film scores at a working pace and to perform live globally, fifty years after Annakkili.

Ilaiyaraaja's reception has moved through three distinct phases, and the analytic story is in the way each phase has revised the one before it. The first, roughly 1976 to 1991, treated him as the dominant working composer of South Indian cinema and described his work in the largely uncritical idiom that the Tamil and Telugu film press of the period used for any major hit-maker. The second, post-Roja, was a period of partial demotion in mainstream commentary: the Rahman partisans argued that Ilaiyaraaja's grammar belonged to a closed era, the Ilaiyaraaja partisans replied that the new sound was sonically loud and harmonically thin, and the standoff froze the critical conversation for nearly two decades.

The third phase, beginning roughly with the post-2010 academic and online re-evaluation, has been a serious reassessment that takes the catalogue's compositional method as the subject. Music writers in Film Companion and The Hindu, long-form pieces in Rolling Stone India, the YouTube-based analytic culture around Tamil-film score breakdowns, and a small academic literature have together moved the conversation away from the partisan binary and toward an argument about Ilaiyaraaja as a counterpoint-trained composer working in a folk-cinema register at industrial scale. The Vetrimaaran scores have done the rest: they make the case in the present tense rather than the historical.

A first listener can use a small set of films and albums as anchors. Mouna Ragam (1986) and Nayakan (1987) for the Mani Ratnam decade and the BGM-as-character work; 16 Vayathinile (1977) and Mullum Malarum (1978) for the Bharathiraja-Mahendran New Wave; Salangai Oli (1983) and Sindhu Bhairavi (1985) for the K Balachander-K Viswanath Carnatic register; Saagara Sangamam (1983) for the Telugu Viswanath cycle; Punnagai Mannan (1986) for the flute-led Kamal Haasan idiom; Thoovanathumbikal (1987) for the Malayalam art-mainstream; Hey Ram (2000) for the long-form orchestral late entry; the non-film albums How To Name It? (1986) and Nothing But Wind (1988) for the concert-music side; and Viduthalai I (2023) for the Vetrimaaran late work. Every other strand in the catalogue is one or two films from one of those entries.

Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), released right at the threshold of the decade, set the tone — Sooraj Barjatya's Rajshri-produced romance launched Salman Khan and proved that the family musical, in retreat through the late 1980s, was a viable theatrical form again. Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), again a Barjatya film, ran for over a year at major theatres without a single villain in its 206 minutes and finished as the highest-grossing Indian film of the 1990s. Aditya Chopra's Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, was the cultural event of the decade and started the longest unbroken theatrical run in cinema history at Mumbai's Maratha Mandir, where it has played, in some form, since 20 October 1995. Karan Johar's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which inherited the DDLJ register and added a self-aware urban gloss, confirmed that the Yash Raj template was now an industry standard.

Outside the romance lane, three films opened other registers. Mani Ratnam's Hindi-language Bombay (1995) and Dil Se.. (1998) brought the Tamil director into Hindi-cinema currency at a moment when Hindi had lost its monopoly on prestige. Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela (1995), produced through his Factory and starring Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar and Jackie Shroff, brought a new visual rhythm and an A.R. Rahman score that would reshape Hindi-cinema sound. And Satya (1998), Varma's Mumbai-underworld feature with a screenplay co-written by an unknown Anurag Kashyap and Saurabh Shukla, opened the Indian gangster film as a serious genre and seeded the indie current that would flower a decade later.

The 1990s, more than any decade before or since, belonged to the producer. Rajshri Productions, the Barjatya family's nearly fifty-year-old Mumbai banner, anchored the family-musical revival through Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! and effectively defined the wedding film as a Hindi-cinema sub-genre with budget controls, in-house music supervision and a specific star-and-extended-family casting logic. Yash Raj Films, founded by Yash Chopra in 1970 but professionalised under Aditya Chopra in the second half of the 1990s, used DDLJ to launch a corporate-distribution and overseas-marketing infrastructure that nothing else in the Hindi industry then had. Dharma Productions, founded by Yash Johar in 1979, transformed under his son Karan Johar from a one-film-at-a-time outfit into Yash Raj's structural rival.

The three banners essentially built the producer-director-star alliance that would carry Hindi cinema through the 2000s and 2010s. Aditya Chopra's debut at 24, Karan Johar's debut at 26, and Sooraj Barjatya's run from 27 to 32 are not minor biographical details; they are evidence of an unusually specific generational handover, in which the second generation of three production families took industrial control simultaneously and wrote a commercial template that would outlast the films that produced it. The other significant producer of the decade was Ram Gopal Varma's Factory, which operated with the opposite logic — small budgets, location shooting, freelance assistant-director-to-director progression — and produced the institutional ground for the Anurag Kashyap school.

Shah Rukh Khan came to film from television, where he had played a soldier in Fauji and a circus performer in Circus, and broke into Hindi cinema with Deewana (1992). His decisive years were 1993 — Baazigar and Darr both released within months of each other, both with Khan as a romantic obsessive whose obsession curdled into violence. Yash Chopra's Darr in particular cast him as a stalker whose quasi-sympathetic framing was contested at release and remains contested. He was domesticated into the romantic lead by DDLJ (1995) and consolidated through Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Dil Se.. (1998) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998).

Aamir Khan, already established by Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), spent the decade alternating between mass commercial cinema (Dil, 1990; Raja Hindustani, 1996) and writer-led prestige work (1942: A Love Story, 1994; Sarfarosh, 1999). The pattern would harden in the 2000s into the writer-led-prestige-only model that produced Lagaan and 3 Idiots. Salman Khan, after Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), anchored Saajan (1991), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994) and Karan Arjun (1995, with Shah Rukh Khan), establishing the mass-family register he would later remake into the Dabangg and Tiger franchises. By 1999 the three Khans had partitioned the leading-man market into three lanes — romantic-prestige (SRK), writer-led-prestige (Aamir), mass-family (Salman) — and the partition would hold with very minor adjustments for the next twenty-five years.

The 1990s were the decade Hindi-cinema music briefly outgrew the films it served. The cassette economy that T-Series and Tips Industries had built through the late 1980s scaled in the 1990s into a genuinely industrial business — Aashiqui (1990), the Mahesh Bhatt-Rahul Roy debut romance scored by Nadeem-Shravan, sold an estimated twenty million cassette units, and DDLJ's soundtrack across composers Jatin-Lalit cleared similar volumes. Gulshan Kumar's T-Series, which had begun with bootleg religious recordings in Delhi's Daryaganj market, grew into a vertically integrated label-and-distribution operation. Kumar was assassinated in August 1997 in what Mumbai police later linked to the D-Company underworld, and the case has remained a cultural reference point for the era's nexus between film, music and organised crime.

The decade's three dominant composer outfits worked the romantic register. Nadeem-Shravan, on the back of Aashiqui, scored Saajan (1991), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Raja Hindustani (1996), Pardes (1997). Jatin-Lalit scored Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). Anand-Milind anchored QSQT (1988) and Dil (1990). Then there was A.R. Rahman, who crossed into Hindi cinema through the Hindi dub of Roja in 1992 and into original-language Hindi work with Rangeela (1995). Across Bombay (1995, dubbed), Dil Se.. (1998) and Taal (1999), Rahman effectively re-engineered Hindi-cinema rhythm, instrumentation and mix. The post-1995 Hindi soundtrack does not sound like the pre-1995 one, and Rahman is the reason.
