• In 'Prem Bandhan' (1979), Hangal played a blind father and Lalita Pawar played his wife. She physically guided him through every scene — not just as a character, but as an actor. Hangal later said she would tap his arm twice before each take to signal where the camera was.
• Lalita Pawar was 20 years older than Hangal, but on the sets of 'Kali Ghata' (1980), she insisted he call her 'Bhabhi' (sister-in-law) instead of 'Maa' — because she thought it was bad luck to play mother to a man she respected as a peer.
• They were cast together for the first time in 'Prem Bandhan' (1979) because the director, Rajkumar Kohli, needed two actors who could cry on cue without glycerin. Hangal and Pawar were the only two in the cast who refused to use it — they both cried real tears by thinking of their own dead children.
• Their pairing in 'Phir Wohi Raat' (1980) was so convincing as a troubled mother-son duo that the film's producer immediately signed them for a third project — but Hangal fell ill and the film was shelved. That script was later rewritten for a different pair and became 'Arjun' (1985).
• Hangal once told a journalist: 'Lalita ji and I never rehearsed. We would just look at each other's eyes and know what the other was going to say. It was like we had been married for forty years — except she was scolding me in every film.'
