• Bir cast Gokhale in 'Aadat Se Majboor' (1981) after seeing him in a Marathi play. Gokhale was hesitant about Hindi cinema. Bir convinced him by promising complete creative freedom on set.
• On 'Aadhi Mimansa' (1991), Bir would shoot Gokhale's scenes in single, unbroken takes. Gokhale later said Bir's trust made him push his own limits — he never asked for a retake on that film.
• Bir and Gokhale shared a ritual before every shoot: they'd sit silently for five minutes, then Bir would say 'chalo' and Gokhale would nod. No other words were exchanged before 'action'.
• Their third film 'Aranyaka' (1994) was the first Hindi feature to be shot entirely in the Sundarbans mangrove forest. The West Bengal forest department later used its footage for a conservation documentary.
• Gokhale once said about Bir: 'He didn't direct me. He just placed me in the frame and let the forest or the room do the rest. I was his instrument, not his actor.'
