• Kaali Venkat was a theatre regular when Singamuthu spotted him during a stage play in 2009. Singamuthu insisted the director of Nellu cast Venkat as the lead, even though the director wanted a more established face.
• In Nellu (2010), Singamuthu played the comic sidekick while Venkat carried the emotional weight. But on set, they swapped roles — Venkat would feed Singamuthu punchlines during rehearsals, and Singamuthu would then improvise them into the final cut. That back-and-forth gave the film its only laughs.
• Their pairing in Mapla Singam (2016) was so flat that both actors later admitted it killed their chances of being cast together again. No director has paired them since.
• During the shoot of Kodi (2016), Singamuthu’s father passed away. Kaali Venkat quietly took over his scenes for two days, letting Singamuthu go home without telling the production team. Singamuthu only found out months later from a crew member.
• Singamuthu once said in a 2017 interview: 'Kaali is the only co-actor who made me feel like I was acting in a play, not a film. He never let me feel the camera.'
