• Kanaka was already a known face when she signed Samundi (1992), but Ponnambalam was still a stuntman trying to break into acting. She personally asked the director to cast him as her villain — she had seen him fight on another set and told the team, 'That guy has the eyes for it.'
• In Periya Kudumbam (1995), Ponnambalam played a mute henchman who only communicated through grunts and stares. Kanaka, playing his love interest, had to carry every dialogue-heavy scene alone. She later said in an interview that his silence made her act harder — she had to fill the space with her voice and eyes.
• On the sets of Simmarasi (1998), Ponnambalam would bring Kanaka homemade biryani every Friday. She was a strict vegetarian, so he learned to make a mushroom version just for her. The crew called it 'Kanaka biryani' for years after.
• Kanaka once told a magazine: 'Ponnambalam never needed words to scare you. On screen, he just had to stand still. Off screen, he was the one who made sure I ate properly during 16-hour shifts.'
• Their pairing in Samundi (1992) was so effective that the director reused the exact same villain-heroine dynamic in his next film — swapping Kanaka for a younger actress but keeping Ponnambalam. That film became a sleeper hit, and Ponnambalam got his first solo villain poster.
