• Chinni Jayanth was a popular comedian when he decided to turn director. For his debut, Putham Pudhu Payanam (1991), he cast K. S. Ravikumar as the lead — even though Ravikumar was mostly known as a villain at the time. Jayanth bet that Ravikumar's intensity could carry a romantic hero role. It worked.
• On the sets of Pondatti Rajyam (1992), Ravikumar would often rewrite his own dialogues on the spot. Chinni Jayanth, as director, let him do it — because Ravikumar's rewrites made the comedy scenes land harder. Jayanth later said Ravikumar had a 'natural ear for timing' that he trusted more than his own script.
• Band Master (1993) was the last film they made together. But the real ripple? Ravikumar's performance in that film convinced producer K. Balachander to cast him as a lead in Duet (1994). That film made Ravikumar a full-fledged star. Without Band Master, no Duet.
• After Band Master flopped, Chinni Jayanth and Ravikumar never worked together again. But they stayed close off-screen. Ravikumar was one of the few people Jayanth called when he was struggling with health issues in the late 2000s. They'd meet for tea and never talk about films.
• K. S. Ravikumar once said in a 2014 interview: 'Chinni Jayanth gave me my first chance to be a hero. I owe him my career. But after Band Master, we both knew we had said everything we needed to say on screen.'
