• Ilavarasi was a rising star when she agreed to do 'Avan' (1985) opposite Goundamani, who was still known mainly as a comedian. She later said she took the film because she wanted to work with a 'different kind of hero' — and that gamble made them a hit pair overnight.
• In 'Thalaiyatti Bommaigal' (1986), Goundamani’s loud, physical comedy forced Ilavarasi to play the straight, deadpan foil. She later admitted in an interview that she had to 'hold back her own laughter' in several takes because he kept improvising silly walks mid-scene.
• Their 1989 film 'Rasathi Kalyanam' was one of the earliest Tamil movies to feature a comedic hero and a glamorous heroine in a full-length romantic track — a template that later directors like K. S. Ravikumar would copy for hits like 'Muthu'.

• Ilavarasi once told a magazine: 'Goundamani made me a better actress because I had to stay alert every second. If I blinked, he’d steal the scene.' She said this in a 1990 interview with 'Kumudam'.
• In 'Athaimadi Methaiadi' (1989), the director let them improvise a 10-minute kitchen argument. Goundamani kept throwing rice at Ilavarasi; she threw a ladle back. That unscripted scene became the film’s most replayed moment on TV in the 1990s.
