Long-Term Partnership

The Nizhalgal Ravi & Bose Venkat partnership

After 8 years apart, they came back together for Nandhi Varman (2023). Their work runs across 3 decades of Tamil cinema. They didn't share a set between 2015 and 2023.

From Dhaam Dhoom (2008) to Nandhi Varman (2023). Their most recent film, Nandhi Varman, came out in 2023 — the partnership is still active.

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Dhaam Dhoom; the 2020s to Nandhi Varman. Nizhalgal Ravi acted in every film; Bose Venkat acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Bose Venkat was actually a stage actor before films. Nizhalgal Ravi spotted him during a theater performance in the early 2000s and personally recommended him to director Jeeva for 'Dhaam Dhoom' (2008). That recommendation became Bose Venkat's first major Tamil film role.
  • In 'Engalukku Veru Kilaigal Kidaiyathu' (2015), Nizhalgal Ravi played the strict father while Bose Venkat played the comic sidekick. Ravi deliberately slowed down his dialogue delivery in every scene with Venkat, giving him space to land punchlines. Venkat later said Ravi would whisper 'wait for my pause' before takes.
  • Between films, the two ran a small theatre workshop together in Chennai for five years (2010–2015). They never advertised it. Students only knew them as 'Ravi anna' and 'Bose anna'. The workshop shut down when both got busy with back-to-back film schedules.
  • Bose Venkat once told a local magazine: 'Ravi sir doesn't act with you. He acts for you. In Dhaam Dhoom, he made sure my one scene got noticed by the director. That's the kind of co-star he is.'
  • Their workshop trained a young assistant director named S. R. Prabhu, who later cast both of them in 'Nandhi Varman' (2023). That film was Prabhu's directorial debut. He said he wrote the father-son conflict specifically because he'd seen their workshop chemistry.
