The Nizhalgal Ravi & Sivakumar partnership

Between 1985 and 1989, they barely worked apart — 4 films in 4 years. For 4 years, a Nizhalgal–Sivakumar film arrived almost every year. They saved their best for last — Pasa Mazhai (7.5/10) came 4 years in.

From Pournami Alaigal (1985) to Pasa Mazhai (1989). The unfolded closed with Pasa Mazhai in 1989.

The shape of the work

Nizhalgal Ravi acted in every film; Sivakumar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Director J. Mahendran cast them together in Panneer Nadhigal (1986) because he wanted two actors who could play a couple with a quiet, unspoken tension. He later said he picked Ravi for his 'restless eyes' and Sivakumar for his 'calm stillness' — and told them to never look at each other in the climax scene.
  • On the set of Poovum Puyalum (1988), Sivakumar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take to make Ravi laugh. Ravi then started doing the same back. The director had to shoot their scenes separately for two days before they could keep a straight face.
  • During Pasa Mazhai (1989), Ravi's father passed away. Sivakumar quietly paid for the funeral arrangements and didn't tell Ravi until years later. Ravi found out from a mutual friend in 1995.
  • Sivakumar once said in a 1990 interview: 'Ravi is the only co-star who made me forget my lines. Not because he was bad — because he was too good. I'd just watch him act.'
  • Their third film Pasa Mazhai (1989) directly inspired director Balu Mahendra to cast both of them again in his next project — but the film never got made. The script later became the basis for a 1995 TV serial that launched a new generation of actors.
