The Charlie & Sivakumar partnership

From Yaro Ezhudiya Kavithai (1986) to Kannupada Poguthaiya (1999). The ran closed with Kannupada Poguthaiya in 1999. It started with Yaro Ezhudiya Kavithai (1986).

The shape of the work

The 1990s account for 83% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Yaro Ezhudiya Kavithai; the 1990s to Raman Abdullah. Charlie acted in every film; Sivakumar acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Charlie was a popular comedian when he was cast opposite Sivakumar in 'Yaro Ezhudiya Kavithai' (1986). But Sivakumar was hesitant — he thought a comedian couldn't carry a romantic lead. Charlie convinced him by narrating the entire script in one sitting, without a single joke.
  • On the sets of 'Sir I Love You' (1991), Sivakumar would deliberately flub his lines in the first take. He did it to make Charlie laugh and break his tension. Charlie later said that Sivakumar's playful teasing helped him loosen up and deliver his best comic timing.
  • During the shoot of 'Onna Irukka Kathukkanum' (1992), Charlie's father passed away. Sivakumar quietly took over all production coordination for three days so Charlie could attend the funeral. They never spoke about it publicly.
  • Their film 'Naatupura Paattu' (1996) was the first Tamil movie to feature a full-length folk rap sequence. That track, 'Kattukuyilu', directly inspired the folk-rap trend in Tamil cinema that later blew up with 'Nadodigal' (2009).
  • Charlie once said in a 1998 interview: 'Sivakumar made me believe I could be a hero. He didn't treat me like a sidekick. He treated me like his equal on screen. That's rare in this industry.'
  • In 'Raman Abdullah' (1997), Sivakumar played a Muslim man and Charlie played a Hindu man. They swapped real-life mannerisms on set — Sivakumar started using Charlie's hand gestures, Charlie picked up Sivakumar's walking style. The director kept it all in the final cut.
