• Utpal Dutt was the one who insisted on casting Rati Agnihotri in 'Shaukeen' (1982). The director, Basu Chatterjee, initially wanted a different actress, but Dutt pushed for Rati because he felt her innocent screen presence would make his lecherous character's pursuit funnier.
• In 'Shaukeen', Dutt deliberately played up his character's awkwardness around Rati's character. He would pause mid-dialogue and fumble with his glasses, letting Rati's calm, unbothered reactions do the comedy work. She never laughed at him on screen — that's what made the scenes land.
• Rati Agnihotri has said that Utpal Dutt treated her like a daughter on set. He would personally check her lunchbox and make sure she wasn't overworking. She called him 'Utpal-da' and he called her 'Bachcha' — a nickname that stuck through all three films.
