• Mahendran cast Kumarimuthu in 'Johnny' (1980) after seeing him in a stage play. Kumarimuthu was a theatre actor with zero film experience at the time. Mahendran took a risk on him for a supporting role that ended up being the film's comic relief backbone.
• On the sets of 'Nandu' (1981), Mahendran would give Kumarimuthu only a one-line scene premise and let him improvise the entire dialogue. Kumarimuthu's natural timing shaped the film's tone more than the written script did.
• During the making of 'Metti' (1982), Mahendran and Kumarimuthu shared a small room near the shooting location for three months. They would rehearse scenes at night by candlelight because the power would cut off regularly.
