• Soori was a struggling comedian when director Raju Sundaram cast him opposite John Vijay in Vellaikaara Durai (2014). John had already made a name as a villain. Soori later said John’s presence on set made him raise his game — he didn’t want to be the weak link.
• In Saamy II (2018), John Vijay played the comic sidekick to Soori’s lead comedian. They traded one-liners so fast that director Hari let them improvise entire stretches. The scene where they argue over a stolen idli was entirely ad-libbed.
• Sanga Thamizhan (2019) was the first time Soori played a full-fledged hero role. John Vijay played his friend. The film’s success directly led to Soori getting his own solo hero projects — something that wouldn’t have happened without John anchoring him on screen.
• John Vijay and Soori never hung out outside sets. But on every film, John would quietly sit with Soori before a comedy scene and run lines with him until both were laughing. Soori called it “free acting class” in an interview.
