Chirai(1984)
'Sirai' (also spelled 'Chirai') is a 1984 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by R. C. Sakthi. The film stars Lakshmi as Bhagirathi and Rajesh as Anthony, with Pandiyan, Ilavarasi, and V. Gopalakrishnan in supporting roles. The story follows a Brahmin woman who, after being raped by a wealthy landlord and abandoned by her husband, moves into the rapist's home as a form of self-imposed punishment. The film is based on Anuradha Ramanan's award-winning 1980 short story of the same name. Despite facing calls for a ban from Brahmin organisations, the film received critical acclaim for Lakshmi's performance and became a commercial success with a 100-day theatrical run. It was released on 22 November 1984 and later remade in Telugu as 'Siksha' (1985).
