The story follows Gayathri, a gentle Brahmin housewife who develops severe mental illness after witnessing a murder, leading to tragedy and divorce. The film is an adaptation of Maharishi's 1976 novel of the same name and features a soundtrack composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Bhadrakali received unanimous critical acclaim upon its December 1976 release and became a commercial success at the box office. The film was later remade in Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi by the same director.

Storyline
