
Sadgati(1981)
Sadgati is a 1981 Hindi television film directed by Satyajit Ray. It stars Om Puri as Dukhi, a poor Dalit grass cutter, and Smita Patil as his wife Jhuria. The film is based on a short story by Munshi Premchand. It follows Dukhi's fatal visit to a Brahmin priest to fix his daughter's wedding date. The priest exploits Dukhi with hard labour, leading to his death from exhaustion. The film is a scathing critique of the caste system and untouchability. It was produced by Doordarshan and was their first colour television production. Sadgati won the National Film Award – Special Jury Award. The film is known for its minimalist style and powerful performances. It remains a landmark in Indian parallel cinema.

Storyline
Dukhi, a poor Dalit, needs an auspicious date for his daughter's wedding. He goes to the village Brahmin priest for help. The priest agrees but demands free labour. Dukhi, weak from illness, works all day without food. He collapses and dies. The priest then drags his body away to avoid blame.
