Kathikappal Full Story Explained (2008)

The film opens in 1988. A brutal forest brigand named Veeraiyyan kidnaps a former minister. He holds him captive in the dense forests of Kodaikanal and demands a ransom of three crores. Police Commissioner Chandrabose leads a squad of four men — Thennavan, Jayaprakash, Sakthivel, and Vinoth Kumar — to rescue the minister. During the operation, the minister is killed. The respected doctor Pari Vallal, who was treating villagers in a remote area, is also shot dead. Veeraiyyan dies from his injuries. The official story says the police killed the brigand but could not save the hostages.

Before his death, Pari Vallal had a beautiful life. He worked selflessly in a remote village, helping poor patients. He met an orphan named Sara, who grew up in a church. She decided to assist him in his medical work. They fell deeply in love and got married. Their happiness was cut short when Pari Vallal was murdered. Sara was left alone, devastated. She later adopted a daughter named Kabini and lived quietly in the same village.

Twenty years later, in 2008, the story jumps to the present. During the annual death ceremony of Pari Vallal, an injured man named Joshua Prakash appears. He walks into the village and declares that he is the reincarnation of Pari Vallal. The villagers are stunned. They think it is a sick joke. They beat him up and tie him to a post. But Joshua keeps insisting. He remembers specific details about the village and the people. Sara, the widow, is confused and shaken.

The next day, a woman named Mallika arrives. She claims to be Joshua's wife. She is angry and embarrassed. She tells everyone that after their marriage, Joshua started acting strange. He claimed to be Pari Vallal. His parents locked him in a room for twelve years because of his behavior. Mallika wants to take him away. But Joshua's detailed memories convince many villagers. Even Elangovan, Pari Vallal's brother and a psychiatrist, interviews Joshua and confirms he is telling the truth.

Mallika decides to leave. But Joshua stops her and confesses his real motive. He says he loves her, but he also wants to find the money that Veeraiyyan hid in the forest. He claims the hidden treasure is three crores. This confession is overheard by Chandrabose and his squad. They kidnap Joshua and force him to reveal the hiding spot. They go to the forest and dig. Instead of money, they find the corpse of Thennavan, one of their own men.

At this moment, Sara appears with a rifle. She threatens to kill everyone. The full truth comes out. In 1988, Chandrabose and his squad were actually partners with Veeraiyyan. They were all criminals. They double-crossed Veeraiyyan and killed the minister. Veeraiyyan tried to escape but was shot. Before dying, he told Pari Vallal where the money was hidden. Thennavan killed Pari Vallal to keep the secret. Joshua is not a reincarnation. He is the son of the murdered minister. He and Sara planned this elaborate revenge together. They kill Chandrabose and his entire squad. Joshua tells Sara to keep the money. He leaves with Mallika and adopts Kabini, starting a new life.
