Full Plot

Kokki Kumar is a schoolboy living in the Pudhupettai slums of North Chennai. One day, he returns from a movie and finds his mother dead. His father killed her during a fight. Kumar overhears his father planning to kill him too, because he is a witness. So Kumar runs away from home. He becomes homeless and starts begging. The police arrest him on false charges. After getting bail, he meets Mani, who works for a gangster named Anbu. Anbu works for a politician named Thamizhselvan. They take Kumar in and give him small jobs.

During a fight with rival gangsters led by politician Murthy, Kumar kills Murthy's brother all by himself. This earns him respect. Anbu puts Kumar in a gang of professional killers. Kumar learns to kill without hesitation. Murthy's men keep attacking him, but Kumar kills them one by one. He becomes known as a dangerous man.

Kumar falls in love with Krishnaveni, a prostitute who works for Anbu. He asks Anbu to set her free. Anbu refuses and beats her badly. Kumar begs Anbu to forgive him, but Anbu says no. So Kumar kills Anbu and takes over his business. Thamizhselvan lets Kumar keep the business if he can survive the night from Anbu's men. Kumar survives.

Kumar then takes revenge on his father. He tricks his father into coming to a place where a grave is dug. Kumar buries his father alive for killing his mother. Now Kumar becomes the most feared don in North Chennai. He paralyzes Murthy for refusing peace. He meets Mani's sister Selvi and forces her to marry him on the day of her wedding. Mani tries to kill Kumar but fails. Mani then joins Murthy's gang.

Krishnaveni tells Kumar she is pregnant. Kumar marries her too. Mani becomes a police informant and testifies against Kumar. Kumar threatens Selvi and her mother, so they do not testify. He escapes charges. Thamizhselvan gives Kumar a party position to keep him loyal. But Kumar wants an MLA seat. Everyone laughs at him. Thamizhselvan removes him from the party.

Murthy plans to kill Kumar and his family. Kumar sends Krishnaveni and their baby away for safety. But Murthy's men catch them, kill Krishnaveni, and take the baby. Kumar asks Selvi to get Mani's help. Selvi refuses because Kumar ruined her life. Mani secretly returns the baby to Kumar. Murthy hangs Mani for helping. Kumar gives the baby to a kind woman and does not tell her he is the father.

Kumar attacks Murthy's home and kills all his men. His right hand gets crippled in the fight. Murthy commits suicide. The police arrest Kumar. In jail, Kumar thinks he will be hanged. But the Chief Minister releases him and makes him an MLA candidate. In the epilogue, Kumar serves three terms as MLA and two terms as Finance Minister. He never finds his son. Thamizhselvan retires abroad. Selvi marries her old fiancé, but he disappears, and she ends up in a mental asylum.

Themes

Crime pays

The film shows that crime can lead to success. Kumar starts as a poor student and becomes a powerful minister. He kills, steals, and threatens people, but he never gets punished. The system rewards him. This is the film's most uncomfortable truth.

Cycle of violence

Violence creates more violence. Kumar's father kills his mother. Kumar kills his father. Then Kumar kills his boss and rivals. Every death leads to another death. No one breaks the cycle. Everyone ends up dead or broken.

Loss of humanity

Kumar starts as a scared boy. He becomes a cold-blooded killer. He loses his ability to love or trust. He forces a woman to marry him. He gives away his own baby. By the end, he is rich and powerful but completely empty inside.

Politics and crime

The film shows how politics and crime are the same thing. Politicians like Thamizhselvan and Murthy run gangs. Gangsters like Kumar become politicians. The line between law and crime does not exist. Power comes from violence, not votes.

Family destruction

Every family in the film is broken. Kumar's father kills his mother. Kumar buries his father alive. He loses his wife and son. Selvi's family is destroyed by Kumar's actions. The film shows that crime destroys everyone close to you.

How does it end?

Ending Explained

The ending of Pudhupettai is dark and ironic. Kumar sits in his jail cell, scared and alone. He thinks the guards are coming to hang him. But instead, the Chief Minister releases him. Kumar becomes an MLA candidate. In the epilogue, we learn that Kumar served three terms as MLA and two terms as Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu. He becomes a successful politician. But he never finds his son. The woman who adopted the baby does not know Kumar is the father. Thamizhselvan retires abroad. Selvi marries her old fiancé, but he disappears after two months. She ends up in a mental asylum. Kumar wins in politics but loses everything that matters. The final message is clear: crime pays, but it costs your soul. Kumar praises Murthy and says he would have killed Murthy's killers if India was not Gandhi's birthplace. This shows that Kumar has learned nothing. He is still a violent man, just in a suit now.
