Trivia

  • The film was inspired by a real-life incident of a mentally disturbed woman at a railway station, which director R. V. Udayakumar read about in a newspaper.
  • This was one of the earliest films for actress Roja, who played Chinthamani, shortly after her debut in the blockbuster 'Chinna Thambi'.
  • The movie's title 'Ponnumani' refers to the male lead's name, which is relatively rare in Tamil cinema where titles often feature the heroine's name.
  • Composer Deva, known for fast-paced numbers, created a softer, more melancholic soundtrack to suit the film's tragic love story.
  • The film was shot extensively in and around Theni district, using its natural landscapes to contrast the village innocence with the city's harsh impact.
  • Despite its dramatic plot, the film did not perform well commercially, overshadowed by bigger action and family dramas of the early 1990s.
  • Actor Napoleon, who played Ponnumani, was primarily known for villain roles, making this sympathetic lead character a notable shift in his career at the time.
