Storyline

A young girl's world becomes complicated when her family celebrates the birth of a baby boy. As she watches them pour celebration and affection on her new brother, a painful truth becomes impossible to ignore: her family has treated her very differently throughout her entire life, simply because she's a girl. Now caught between deep hurt and growing anger toward her sibling, she must navigate the weight of gender bias and unfairness that she can no longer pretend doesn't exist.

A girl refuses to be forgotten.

Trivia

  • The title 'Katti' is a word Indian children use on the playground to declare a falling-out — saying 'katti' to someone means you are no longer friends, making it a fitting name for a story built on broken bonds within a family.
  • The film taps into one of India's most discussed social issues: the deep-rooted cultural preference for a male child, a bias that has shaped family dynamics for generations and sparked government awareness campaigns and legal protections for girls.
  • Traditional celebrations like the 'lohri' festival in North India have historically been far more muted for the birth of a girl than a boy — a contrast the film's premise draws its emotional tension from.
  • By placing a young girl at the centre of the story, the film joins a growing wave of Indian family dramas — from 'Dhadak' to 'Nil Battey Sannata' — that explore gender inequality through the eyes of children rather than adults, making the injustice feel immediate and personal.
  • Sibling rivalry driven by parental favouritism is a recurring theme in Hindi cinema, but Katti frames it through a gender lens, asking why a family's joy can diminish for one child simply because of who arrives next.
  • The Drama and Family genre combination is a challenging one in Bollywood, as films in this space need to hold the attention of both general audiences and those looking for social commentary — striking that balance is often what separates a quiet hit from a forgotten release.
