The Direct-to-OTT Tracker, India: Films That Skipped Theatres, 2022–2026
Indian cinema has logged roughly 22 confirmed direct-to-OTT releases across Hindi, Tamil and Telugu between 2022 and 2026 H1 — a structural residue of the COVID-era streaming boom that the post-2023 window-compression regime has steadily eroded. The 2022–2024 trilogy on this site established the per-language baseline: 9 Tamil D2OTT films (per the Tamil OTT Pipeline 2022–2024), 3 Hindi (per the Hindi OTT Pipeline 2022–2024) and 2 Telugu (per the Telugu OTT Pipeline 2022–2024). This page is the canonical named-film inventory feeding those counts, plus the 2025 and 2026 H1 additions tracked live.
GudVibe defines a direct-to-OTT (D2OTT) release as one where the gap between theatrical and OTT premiere is ≤7 days, or where no theatrical release is verifiable. Same methodology as the OTT pipeline trilogy. We update this tracker as new D2OTT cases are confirmed — the 2024–2026 slowdown (window ≤7d) means new additions are now a trickle rather than a flood, but each confirmed case is named below with platform, year and a deep-link to the GudVibe item record.

What Counts as Direct-to-OTT
The working definition on this tracker is the same one the GudVibe OTT pipeline trilogy uses: a film qualifies as direct-to-OTT if its theatrical-to-OTT gap is ≤7 days, OR if no theatrical release is verifiable from trade press, BookMyShow archives or distributor announcements. The ≤7-day window catches the soft-launch cases where a producer technically clears a one- or two-day theatrical run to keep awards eligibility intact, then dumps the film onto streaming the same week.
Two stricter and looser definitions exist in the wild. The purist view counts only films with literally zero theatrical run — that excludes things like Soorarai Pottru, which had a token release but was D2OTT in spirit. The relaxed ≤30-day definition pulls in window-compressed 2024 mainstream titles like Amaran or Stree 2, which we firmly classify as theatrical-first. The ≤7-day cut keeps the list editorially defensible.

Hindi D2OTT Films
| Film | Release Year | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| Bhakshak | 2024 | Netflix |
| Ae Watan Mere Watan | 2024 | Prime Video |
| Amar Singh Chamkila | 2024 | Netflix |
| Monica, O My Darling | 2022 | Netflix |
| Qala | 2022 | Netflix |
| Freddy | 2022 | JioHotstar |
| Darlings | 2022 | Netflix |
| Atrangi Re | 2021 | JioHotstar |
| Haseen Dillruba | 2021 | Netflix |
| Tribhanga | 2021 | Netflix |
The Hindi D2OTT spike of 2020–2022 was driven almost entirely by the pandemic backlog: Netflix and JioHotstar absorbed dozens of mid-budget Hindi titles whose theatrical slots evaporated. Darlings, Qala and Monica, O My Darling are the three editorially canonical 2022 D2OTT cases — all Netflix, all featured in the Hindi OTT Pipeline 2022–2024 count of 3.
From 2023 onward Hindi D2OTT became a different beast: smaller, mostly Netflix prestige plays (Amar Singh Chamkila, Bhakshak, Ae Watan Mere Watan), with the major studios pulling everything mid-budget back into the theatrical window. The 2024 cohort still totals five confirmed cases (CY2024), but every one of them is a director-led prestige acquisition rather than a panicked dump.
By 2025 the spigot tightened further: the only Hindi 2025 candidate currently flagged is Fateh (id 78465, JioHotstar) — and its theatrical run is contested in trade press, so we hold it in review rather than confirm.
Tamil D2OTT Films
| Film | Release Year | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist Family | 2025 | JioHotstar |
| Iravin Nizhal | 2022 | Prime Video |
| Writer | 2021 | Aha, Prime Video |
| Raame Aandalum Raavane Aandalum | 2021 | Prime Video |
| Annabelle Sethupathi | 2021 | JioHotstar |
| Vaazhl | 2021 | SonyLIV |
| Naane Varuven | 2021 | Prime Video, Sun NXT |
| Soorarai Pottru | 2020 | Prime Video |
| Ka Pae Ranasingam | 2020 | ZEE5 |
Soorarai Pottru (2020, Prime Video) is the canonical Tamil D2OTT — a Suriya-led, National-Award-winning film that converted its scrapped Diwali 2020 slot into a same-day Prime Video premiere. It remains the editorial yardstick for the ≤7-day rule.
The 2021 Tamil cohort dominates the language tally: six of the nine films flagged in 15134 released between April and December 2021, with Aha, JioHotstar and Prime Video splitting the supply. Tamil D2OTT volume collapsed in 2023 — the items table shows zero confirmed cases that year, and only Tourist Family in 2025 H1 fits the ≤7-day rule.
The pattern matches what the Tamil OTT Pipeline 2022–2024 page argues: window-compression (theatrical-to-OTT now averages 35 days for Tamil mid-budget films) means producers no longer need to skip theatres entirely. A short window does the same job financially.
Telugu D2OTT Films
| Film | Release Year | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| Aa Nimisham | 2024 | ZEE5 |
| Gangs of Godavari | 2024 | Netflix, Prime Video |
The Telugu D2OTT list is the shortest of the three majors — two confirmed cases in 2022–2024 per 15136, both falling in 2024. Aa Nimisham (the anchor item for this tracker) is a ZEE5 acquisition with an OTT date that precedes its stated theatrical date, the cleanest no-verifiable-theatrical signal we have. Gangs of Godavari sits at the edge of the ≤7-day rule but is included because trade-press coverage treats it as an OTT-first launch.
Telugu D2OTT volume is structurally low because Aha — the dominant regional platform — funds originals upstream rather than acquiring D2OTT post-production. That moves Telugu D2OTT activity into the platform-original bucket and out of this tracker's scope.
The 2024–2026 D2OTT Slowdown
The headline finding of this tracker is that pure D2OTT releases have been falling steadily since 2023. The 2021 peak across all languages was double-digit per quarter; the 2024 full-year total across Hindi + Tamil + Telugu sits at roughly 6–7 confirmed cases (CY2024); 2025 H1 has logged one (window ≤7d).
OTT originals output in India fell ~13% YoY in 2024 (per OTT Streaming Statistics India 2026). D2OTT volume tracks that decline almost exactly — the same producers who shelved originals also stopped acquiring D2OTT theatrical-skips.
Two structural drivers explain the contraction. First, window-compression: the average theatrical-to-OTT gap in India is now ~35 days, which captures most of the financial upside producers used to chase by skipping theatres entirely. Second, platform belt-tightening — the 2023–2024 originals slowdown documented in 15138 means streamers are spending less on acquisitions of all kinds, including D2OTT pickups.
The result: D2OTT in 2024–2026 is no longer a default option for mid-budget Indian films. It is now a niche pathway reserved for prestige acquisitions, festival pick-ups, and films whose theatrical economics genuinely do not work.
The Notable 2024–2026 D2OTT Cases
The five Hindi cases verified for CY2024 — Bhakshak (Netflix), Ae Watan Mere Watan (Prime Video), Amar Singh Chamkila (Netflix), Khel Khel Mein (Netflix, post-theatrical short window) and Do Patti (Netflix) — are all platform-prestige acquisitions rather than rescue dumps. Chamkila in particular is a director-marquee play (Imtiaz Ali + Diljit Dosanjh).
The Telugu CY2024 cohort is Aa Nimisham (ZEE5, 2024) and Gangs of Godavari (Netflix/Prime, 2024), both flagged in 15136. Tamil produced zero confirmed D2OTT cases in CY2024; Tourist Family (JioHotstar, 2025) is the only 2025 H1 addition.
No 2026 H1 D2OTT confirmations have landed at the time of writing (window ≤7d). The 2026 candidate pool is being tracked but every flagged film so far has a verifiable theatrical run exceeding 7 days. The tracker will update when that changes.
Why Films Go D2OTT
Four editorial buckets cover almost every D2OTT case on this list. Festival films that find streaming buyers — Netflix and Prime Video routinely acquire post-festival, e.g. several Hindi prestige titles that ran the international circuit before landing on streaming with no Indian theatrical run.
Shelved theatrical projects rescued by OTT — the 2020–2021 cohort is dominated by this pattern, where a pandemic-cancelled theatrical slot converted into an OTT release. Soorarai Pottru and Atrangi Re are the canonical examples. Niche or regional projects where theatrical economics do not work — most of the 2021 Tamil cohort falls here.
Platform-acquired global releases — films picked up by streamers as part of a broader package or pay-1 deal, where the streamer's contractual exclusivity makes a theatrical run commercially impossible. This is now the dominant 2024–2026 pattern.
D2OTT by Platform
| Platform | D2OTT Indian films 2022–2026 H1 |
|---|---|
| Netflix | ~9 (Hindi-skewed) |
| Prime Video | ~6 (Tamil-skewed) |
| JioHotstar | ~4 (Hindi + Tamil) |
| Aha | ~2 (Telugu/Tamil regional) |
| ZEE5 | ~2 (mid-budget Hindi + Telugu) |
| SonyLIV | ~1 (festival-driven) |
Netflix leads the named-D2OTT count because its 2022 Hindi prestige slate (Darlings, Qala, Monica O My Darling) and its 2024 acquisitions (Bhakshak, Chamkila) cluster heavily here. Prime Video's D2OTT footprint is Tamil-weighted, reflecting its dominant regional acquisition strategy in 2020–2022.
JioHotstar's D2OTT pickups are now selective rather than systematic — the Hotstar Specials originals slate absorbs most of the spend that previously went to D2OTT acquisitions. Aha and ZEE5 sit at the regional-niche end of the table, picking up films that have no realistic theatrical path. SonyLIV's D2OTT activity is festival-driven and concentrated in 2021.
How We Track
This tracker is updated as new D2OTT cases are confirmed; films are included only after a verified theatrical-to-OTT gap ≤7 days OR no verifiable theatrical release in trade-press archives. Source: GudVibe items table (1.1M+ rows) cross-referenced against JustWatch India, BookMyShow theatrical archives, platform announcements and trade-press coverage (Mint, Variety, OTTplay, Bollywood Hungama). Per-language totals reconcile against the Tamil, Hindi and Telugu OTT Pipeline trilogy.
FAQ

How many Indian films went direct-to-OTT in 2024?
Around 6–7 Indian films went D2OTT in CY2024 across Hindi, Tamil and Telugu — five Hindi (Bhakshak, Chamkila, Ae Watan Mere Watan, Khel Khel Mein, Do Patti) and two Telugu (Aa Nimisham, Gangs of Godavari).
Which Hindi films skipped theatres?
Canonical D2OTT Hindi titles include Darlings (2022), Qala (2022), Monica O My Darling (2022), Atrangi Re (2021) and Amar Singh Chamkila (2024) — all Netflix or JioHotstar (latest confirmed).
Which platform releases the most direct-to-OTT Indian films?
Netflix leads with ~9 named D2OTT Indian films 2022–2026 H1, driven by its 2022 Hindi prestige slate and 2024 acquisitions. Prime Video follows with a Tamil-weighted ~6 (2022–2026 H1).
