Sridevi (born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan) was a leading actress across Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema, widely regarded as the first female superstar of Indian cinema with a career spanning over 300 films across five languages. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for Mom (2017), received the Padma Shri in 2013, and her iconic roles in Nagina (1986), Mr. India (1987), and Chandni (1989) made her the highest-paid actress in Bollywood through the 1980s–90s. Her range extended from snake-woman fantasy in Nagina to comedic mimicry in Mr. India to a emotionally restrained performance as a Hindi-struggling housewife in English Vinglish (2012), a comeback film after a 15-year hiatus. She died on February 24, 2018, in Dubai; her daughter Janhvi Kapoor has since entered Hindi cinema.
