Blockbuster

Also called: mega-hit, industry hit

A blockbuster, in the Indian context, is a film that performs well above industry-wide commercial expectations, typically defined by net or gross revenue thresholds, recovery multiples on production cost, and theatrical run length. Trade publications such as Box Office India and tracking sites like Sacnilk maintain widely cited classifications: 'hit', 'super-hit', 'blockbuster', 'all-time blockbuster', and 'industry hit'. The exact monetary thresholds shift over time and by industry — a Hindi blockbuster in 2025 typically clears net domestic ₹250 crore, while the Telugu and Tamil benchmarks are calibrated separately. In the pan-Indian era, a single film's blockbuster status is increasingly evaluated on a combined-language basis. The term is also used loosely in marketing to describe any major release, a usage that trade analysts resist.
