Sleeper Hit
Also called: word-of-mouth hit
A sleeper hit is a film that opens to modest box-office numbers and limited critical attention, then accumulates substantial commercial success over its theatrical run on the strength of audience word of mouth. Sleeper hits are characteristically distinguished from films that are 'pre-sold' on stars or marketing spend: their commercial trajectory looks like a slow climb rather than the typical front-loaded fall. In Indian cinema, sleeper hits often emerge from mid-budget films without major stars or with off-genre material — Tumbbad (2018), Andhadhun (2018), Kantara (2022), and Manjummel Boys (2024) are widely cited examples. The streaming era has both expanded the definition (some 'sleeper hits' now do most of their business after OTT release) and complicated it, since streaming success does not always reflect theatrical word-of-mouth dynamics.
