Item Number
Also called: item song, special number
An item number is a song-and-dance sequence inserted into an Indian film that is largely or entirely unconnected to the plot, designed to function as a standalone musical attraction. It typically features an outside performer — historically called an 'item girl' or 'item star' — appearing for that single sequence, and is engineered for high-energy choreography, glamorous styling, and shareable audiovisual hooks. Item numbers became a marketing pillar in the 1990s and 2000s, with songs like Choli Ke Peeche (1993) and Sheila Ki Jawani (2010) functioning as parallel revenue events independent of their host films. The term has become culturally contested: critics argue it objectifies its performers, and the gendered language ('item girl') is now widely avoided. Some industries have moved toward 'special appearance' or 'guest number' framing, while the formal device — a non-narrative dance sequence by an outside star — continues in mass cinema across all four major Indian language industries.
