Mass Film

Also called: massy, mass movie

A mass film is a South Indian genre — most strongly associated with Tamil and Telugu cinema — built around a star's larger-than-life screen persona. It centers on hero-elevation set pieces (slow-motion intro shots, punch dialogues, action sequences scored to roaring brass), broadly drawn moral conflict, and an audience experience designed for whistle-and-clap cinema halls. The mass film is not defined by genre (it can be action, drama, or even romance) but by mode: the film's primary purpose is to celebrate and amplify its star.
