• Balu Mahendra cast Silk Smitha in Moondram Pirai (1982) after seeing her in a small role in a Malayalam film. He later said he picked her because she had 'eyes that could hold a secret' — exactly what the tragic character needed.
• On the sets of Moondram Pirai, Balu Mahendra would whisper the entire emotional backstory of each scene to Silk Smitha just before the camera rolled. She didn't speak much Tamil then, so he used her confusion to get a raw, lost look — which became the character's signature.
• The success of Moondram Pirai directly led to Balu Mahendra remaking it in Hindi as Sadma (1983) with the same lead pair — making Silk Smitha one of the very few South Indian actresses to reprise her own role in a Hindi remake opposite Kamal Haasan.
• After Neengal Kettavai (1984) flopped, Balu Mahendra and Silk Smitha never worked together again. But he remained protective of her — years later, when she was struggling, he quietly recommended her for a character role in a TV series. She didn't take it.
