The 2010s account for 80% of everything they made together. The 2010s belonged to Nimirndhu Nil; the 2020s to Sembi. Thambi Ramaiah acted in every film; G. Gnanasambandam acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Gnanasambandam was a theatre veteran with zero film experience when Thambi Ramaiah cast him in Mathil Mel Poonai (2013). He didn't even know how to face a camera. Ramaiah literally stood behind the director and gave him cues for every single shot.
• In Nimirndhu Nil (2014), Ramaiah wrote a 12-minute monologue for Gnanasambandam's character. They rehearsed it for three days straight. Gnanasambandam delivered it in one take. That scene is still shared in Tamil acting workshops as a masterclass.
• On the sets of Komban (2015), Gnanasambandam would cook traditional Kongunadu food in his van and share it with Ramaiah between shots. Ramaiah later said those meals were the only reason he survived the gruelling 60-day outdoor shoot in Theni.
• Their pairing in Sembi (2022) directly launched the career of director Prabhu Solomon's assistant, who went on to make a critically acclaimed short film about elderly friendship. He said he wrote the script after watching their scenes together.
• Gnanasambandam once told a magazine: 'Thambi Ramaiah doesn't just give you a role. He gives you a character's entire life story. I knew my character's childhood, his first heartbreak, everything — before I even said my first line.'
• After Thodari (2016) flopped, both of them took a six-year break from working together. They didn't speak for two years. Gnanasambandam called Ramaiah in 2020 to apologise for something he said during the film's failure. That call led to Sembi (2022).
