• They first shared screen space in Mohre (1987), a film that was supposed to launch a new hero. But both Kher and Patekar were so intense in their supporting roles that they stole the movie from the lead. The director later admitted he had no idea he was casting two future giants.
• In Parinda (1989), their scenes together have zero overlap in dialogue rhythm. Patekar speaks in short, clipped bursts — almost like punches. Kher responds with long, trembling sentences. The director Vidhu Vinod Chopra said he deliberately kept them apart during rehearsals so their first take would feel like a real collision.
• Despite playing bitter rivals in Parinda, Kher and Patekar were close friends off-screen. Kher once said Patekar would crash at his house unannounced, and they'd stay up all night discussing theatre. Their bond was so strong that Kher personally convinced Patekar to take the role in Parinda when Patekar was hesitant.
• Anupam Kher once said about Nana Patekar: 'He is the only actor who can make me forget my lines. When he looks at me with those eyes, I stop acting. I just react.' He said this in a 1990 interview about their Parinda shoot.
• Their pairing in Parinda directly inspired the casting of the two lead villains in Satya (1998). Ram Gopal Varma wanted the same 'quiet menace vs. explosive rage' dynamic that Kher and Patekar had created, and cast Manoj Bajpayee and Saurabh Shukla to replicate that energy.
• After Dus Kahaniyaan (2007), they never worked together again. Not because of a fight — but because both admitted they had become too similar as actors. Kher said in a 2015 chat show: 'We started finishing each other's sentences. That's dangerous for actors. We needed to stay apart to stay interesting.'
