The Sudeep & S. S. Rajamouli partnership

After 13 years apart, they came back together for Bāhubali: The Epic (2025). They didn't share a set between 2012 and 2025. 2012 was their peak — 3 films in twelve months.

From Naan Ee (2012) to Bāhubali: The Epic (2025). Eega (2012, 7.8/10) is the underseen one in the catalogue.

The shape of the work

The 2010s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 2010s belonged to Makkhi; the 2020s to Bāhubali: The Epic. Sudeep acted in every film; S. S. Rajamouli directed all of them. Mostly Telugu, with 1 film in Tamil.

Partnership facts

  • Rajamouli cast Sudeep as the villain in 'Eega' (2012) after seeing his performance in 'RangiTaranga' — but Sudeep almost said no because he thought a Kannada actor playing a Telugu villain in a Tamil-dubbed film would feel weird. Rajamouli convinced him over a single phone call.
  • Sudeep improvised the entire 'fly chase' sequence in 'Eega' (2012) on set. Rajamouli had storyboarded it, but Sudeep kept adding tiny physical tics — like flicking his collar or adjusting his watch — that made the villain feel real. Rajamouli later said Sudeep's improv saved the film from being cartoonish.
  • Because Sudeep's performance in 'Eega' (2012) was so menacing, Rajamouli wrote a completely new climax for the Tamil version 'Naan Ee' — a darker ending where the villain doesn't just die but gets psychologically broken. That version only exists because of their collaboration.
  • During the 'Eega' shoot, Sudeep and Rajamouli had a running bet: every time Sudeep delivered a dialogue in one take, Rajamouli would buy him a coffee. By the end of the schedule, Sudeep had 47 free coffees. Rajamouli still jokes he lost more money on coffee than on the film's VFX.
