The Mayilsamy & Black Pandi partnership

After 10 years apart, they came back together for Velmurugan Borewells (2014). They didn't share a set between 2004 and 2014. From Ghilli (2004) to Thiruttu Rail (2015).

Ghilli is the one most viewers reach for. It started with Ghilli (2004).

The shape of the work

The 2000s belonged to Ghilli; the 2010s to Thiruttu Rail. Mayilsamy acted in every film; Black Pandi acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Black Pandi was a stunt coordinator before he turned actor. Mayilsamy personally requested him to handle the action sequences in Ghilli (2004). That fight choreography — especially the climax — is what Tamil audiences still quote. Pandi never looked back after that.
  • In Velmurugan Borewells (2014), Mayilsamy played the comic sidekick while Black Pandi played the villain. Their scenes worked because Mayilsamy would deliberately slow down his delivery, giving Pandi space to build menace with just a glare. Pandi later said Mayilsamy taught him how to 'act with silence'.
  • They were neighbours in Chennai for over a decade. Every morning before a shoot, Pandi would knock on Mayilsamy's door and they'd share a cup of tea on the staircase — no talk about films, just family gossip. That ritual lasted through all three movies.
  • Thiruttu Rail (2015) was the last film they made together. It flopped hard. But the train chase sequence in that film — choreographed by Black Pandi — directly inspired a similar scene in a later Vijay-starrer. Pandi reused the same stunt team for that one.
  • Black Pandi once told a magazine: 'Mayilsamy is the only actor who made me laugh so hard on set that I forgot my lines. In Velmurugan Borewells, I messed up three takes because he kept improvising.'
