The Sreekanth & Krishnan-Panju partnership

From Anaya Vilakku (1975) to Perai Solla Oru Pillai (1978). Ilaya Thalaimurai is the one most viewers reach for. The played out closed with Perai Solla Oru Pillai in 1978.

It started with Anaya Vilakku (1975).

The shape of the work

Sreekanth acted in every film; Krishnan-Panju directed all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Sreekanth was a rising star when Krishnan-Panju cast him in Anaya Vilakku (1975). But the director duo almost didn't sign him — they thought his voice was too soft for the lead role. Sreekanth begged for a screen test, did one scene, and won them over on the spot.
  • On the sets of Ilaya Thalaimurai (1977), Krishnan-Panju let Sreekanth improvise most of his dialogue. They realized his natural timing was sharper than anything they could write. So they'd give him a loose scene outline and let him riff — a rare freedom for a director duo known for tight control.
  • Perai Solla Oru Pillai (1978) was the first Tamil film to feature a then-unknown child actor named Kamal Haasan in a supporting role. Sreekanth personally recommended him to Krishnan-Panju after seeing him in a stage play. That film became Kamal's stepping stone into mainstream Tamil cinema.
  • After Perai Solla Oru Pillai wrapped, Sreekanth and Krishnan-Panju never worked together again. No fight, no fallout — just drifted apart. Sreekanth later said in a 1985 interview that they 'ran out of stories that needed each other.' They remained cordial but never reunited.
  • Sreekanth once told a fan magazine: 'Krishnan-Panju didn't direct me. They just pointed the camera and let me be. That's why those three films feel like me, not them.'
