• Director S. A. Chandrasekhar cast Ponnambalam and S. S. Chandran together for the first time in Sendhoorapandi (1993) because he wanted two actors who could genuinely look like they'd kill each other — and both showed up to the set with real-life grudges from a previous film they'd done separately.
• In Periya Marudhu (1994), Ponnambalam played the silent, muscle-heavy enforcer while S. S. Chandran played the loud, twitchy sidekick. Chandran would deliberately flub his lines to make Ponnambalam break character — and the director kept those takes because the frustration on Ponnambalam's face looked more real.
• During the shoot of Thirunelveli (2000), Ponnambalam and S. S. Chandran shared a room in a small lodge near Tenkasi. Chandran would wake up at 4 AM to practice his dialogue, and Ponnambalam would throw a pillow at him. They never spoke about it, but the crew says Chandran kept doing it just to get a reaction.
• S. S. Chandran once told a magazine: 'Ponnambalam doesn't need to act. He just needs to stand there and look at you. I had to work twice as hard to match his silence.'
• Their fight scene in Sendhoorapandi (1993) — where Ponnambalam throws Chandran into a stack of hay bales — was directly referenced by stunt choreographers in the 2005 film Chandramukhi for its raw, un-choreographed feel.
