Partnership facts

• Kushboo was the first choice for Vetri Vizha (1989), but she almost walked out after the first schedule because she felt her role was too small. Ponnambalam personally convinced her to stay, promising to rewrite her part. He kept his word — her screen time doubled.
• In Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), Ponnambalam played a thug who roughs up Kushboo's character. But on set, he kept apologizing between takes. Kushboo finally told him, 'Hit me properly or the scene won't work.' He did — and that slap became the scene audiences remember.
• During the shoot of Naalaya Seidhi (1992), Ponnambalam would bring Kushboo homemade biryani from his mother's kitchen every Friday. She later said it was the only reason she didn't complain about the gruelling night shoots.
• Their pairing in Nattamai (1994) was so well-received that the director, K. S. Ravikumar, wrote a spin-off character for Ponnambalam's henchman role in his next film. That spin-off became a recurring villain template in Tamil cinema for the next decade.
• Kushboo once said in a 1999 interview: 'Ponnambalam was the only co-star who never once made me feel like a heroine. He treated me like a fellow actor. That's rare in this industry.'
• After Simmarasi (1998) wrapped, they never spoke again. No fight — just drifted apart. Ponnambalam later told a friend he regretted not staying in touch, but by then Kushboo had moved to Telugu cinema full-time.
