• Charles Vinoth was a first-time director with no box office pull when he cast Mime Gopi as the villain in '8 Thottakkal'. Gopi, already a known face from 'Madras', agreed to do the film for a fraction of his usual fee because he believed in the script.
• In 'Madras', Gopi played a ruthless rowdy who barely speaks. Charles Vinoth wrote the role specifically so Gopi could use his eyes and body language — no dialogue needed. The scene where Gopi just stares at the hero before a fight is still a meme template in Tamil meme pages.
