Partnership facts

  • Prabhu Deva was already a dance legend in the South when Remo D'Souza, then a choreographer trying to break into directing, flew to Chennai to pitch him 'ABCD'. Prabhu said yes on the spot — but only if Remo let him bring his own dance crew from Tamil cinema. That crew became the core of the film.
  • On the set of 'ABCD 2', Remo realized Prabhu Deva couldn't just act — he'd start improvising dance moves mid-dialogue. Remo started writing scenes around those spontaneous bursts. The 'Bezubaan' sequence was literally built around a 20-second freestyle Prabhu did while waiting for a light setup.
  • Because of their partnership, Varun Dhawan — who was just a rom-com star before 'ABCD 2' — became a bonafide dance hero. Remo cast him opposite Prabhu Deva, and Varun later said that dancing alongside Prabhu in that film taught him 'how to own a frame'. Every dance film Varun did after that traces back to this pairing.
  • Remo D'Souza has said that Prabhu Deva never once complained about the grueling 18-hour dance rehearsals for 'ABCD' — even though Remo himself was collapsing from exhaustion. After every shoot day, Prabhu would quietly massage Remo's shoulders without saying a word. Remo called it 'the most humbling thing' he's ever experienced on set.
  • Remo D'Souza said about Prabhu Deva: 'He is not just a dancer. He is the reason I became a director. If he had said no to ABCD, I would have gone back to choreography forever.'
  • The first time Remo D'Souza met Prabhu Deva to discuss 'ABCD', he was so nervous he forgot the script at home. Prabhu laughed, ordered chai, and said, 'Just show me the steps. I'll know if the film works.' Remo danced in a Chennai restaurant for 10 minutes. Prabhu signed the film over a second cup of chai.
