The 1980s account for 75% of everything they made together. The 1980s belonged to Aayiram Nilave Vaa; the 1990s to Kizhakku Vasal. Karthik acted in every film; Sulakshana acted in all of them. Strictly Tamil cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

• Karthik was a newcomer when he signed Aayiram Nilave Vaa (1983). Sulakshana was already a known face. She personally recommended him to the director after a screen test — that’s how their first film together got greenlit.
• In Rajathandiram (1984), Karthik’s character was loud and impulsive. Sulakshana deliberately underplayed every reaction. She told the director she’d keep her voice low so his energy would pop more. That contrast became the film’s selling point.
• During Ketti Melam (1985), Sulakshana would cook biryani for the entire unit every Friday. Karthik later said she made sure he ate properly because he was shooting double shifts and losing weight. They stayed in touch until her retirement.
• Kizhakku Vasal (1990) was their last film together. It was also the debut of a young comedian named Vadivelu in a small role. Karthik and Sulakshana’s film gave him his first break — he went on to become a legend.
• Karthik once said in a 1991 interview: 'Sulakshana taught me how to react without words. I’d be doing too much, and she’d just look at me — and I’d know to shut up and let the silence work.'
• In Aayiram Nilave Vaa, there’s a scene where Karthik’s character confesses love while walking. Sulakshana’s character doesn’t speak for two full minutes — just walks beside him, eyes down. Karthik later admitted he kept stumbling over his lines because her silence made him nervous. That take made the final cut.
