Partnership facts

• Balachander cast Vanisri in Thamarai Nenjam (1968) after seeing her in a Telugu film. He later said he picked her because she had 'sad eyes that could laugh' — a quality he needed for the complex heroine.
• On the sets of Nangu Suvargal (1971), Balachander would give Vanisri only one-line instructions for emotional scenes. She would then improvise the rest. He told a magazine that she 'understood what I wanted before I finished the sentence.'
• The success of Punnagai (1971) directly led to Balachander casting Vanisri in his first non-romantic, grey-shaded role in Velli Vizha (1972). That film became a template for his later 'strong, flawed woman' characters — a trend he continued with Rajinikanth and Sridevi.
• Vanisri was the only actress Balachander ever called by her real name (Rani) on set. Everyone else got a character name or 'dear.' He said it was because she reminded him of his younger sister.
• Vanisri once said in a 2002 interview: 'Balachander sir never praised me on set. But after Velli Vizha released, he called me at 2 AM and said, "Rani, you made my film better than my script." That was the only compliment he ever gave me.'
