Biography

V. Kumar (born Kumaresan, 28 July 1934, Madras) was a Tamil film music composer known by the title 'Mellisai MaamaNi' (Melody King), who scored music for approximately 80–100 Tamil and Telugu films between 1965 and 1991. He is best remembered for his long collaboration with director K. Balachander, serving as his primary music director on socially realistic films including Nootrukku Nooru (1971), Velli Vizha (1972), and Arangetram (1973). A self-taught musician with no formal classical training, he developed his melodic, folk-influenced style through stage drama compositions before debuting in cinema with Balachander's Neerkumizhi (1965). He received the Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu government, though he remained largely underrecognized during his lifetime, passing away on 7 January 1996.
