Partnership facts

• They first met on the set of Vethu Vettu (2015) — but not as co-stars. Naren was already cast as the lead, and the director brought in Ganja Karuppu for a supporting role after the original actor dropped out last minute. Naren later said he had no idea who Karuppu was until the first day of shoot.
• In Aruva Sanda (2022), Naren played the straight-laced hero while Karuppu was the comic relief. But Karuppu kept improvising lines that made Naren break character mid-scene. The director eventually kept the camera rolling on Naren's genuine laughter — and used those takes in the final cut.
• After Vethu Vettu flopped, Naren and Karuppu didn't speak for nearly five years. They only reconnected when a mutual friend forced them to share a drink at a wedding in 2021. That conversation led directly to Aruva Sanda.
• Ganja Karuppu once told a local magazine: 'Naren is the only actor who can make me look like a serious performer. When I'm with him, I don't feel like a comedian — I feel like an actor.'
• Their third film Mayan (2024) was the first Tamil movie to feature both actors in a father-son dynamic. That casting choice directly inspired two other small-budget Tamil films in 2024 to pair older comedians with younger leads in serious roles.
