• For their first film together, Raman Abdullah (1997), director K. S. Ravikumar cast Naren as the villain. But Naren was so impressed by Charlie's comic timing during the shoot that he personally asked Ravikumar to expand Charlie's role. The director agreed, and Charlie's part was rewritten on the fly.
• In Thaayin Manikodi (1998), Naren played the cold-blooded antagonist while Charlie was the comic relief. Their scenes together had no dialogue overlap — Naren would deliver his lines in a deadpan monotone, then Charlie would break the tension with a rapid-fire punchline. They never rehearsed together; they just fed off each other's rhythm on set.
• After Thaayin Manikodi wrapped, Naren and Charlie didn't speak for nearly 20 years. They only reconnected in 2018 when a mutual friend brought them together for a cup of tea. That meeting led directly to Gurkha (2019) — their third and final film together.
• Charlie once said in a 2019 interview: 'Naren is the only actor who can make me laugh without saying a word. He just stares, and I lose it. That's why our scenes work — I'm genuinely trying not to crack up.'
• Gurkha (2019) was a surprise hit at the box office, and its success directly led to a wave of small-budget Tamil action-comedies in 2020-2021. Producers started actively pairing veteran character actors with younger comedians, copying the Naren-Charlie template.
