• In Nandu (1981), there's a scene where Senthamarai's character has to cry silently while Kumarimuthu's character eats. He deliberately ate noisily — crunching, slurping — to make her cry harder. She later said that sound was the only trigger she needed.
• For Nandu (1981), director Mahendran wanted a fresh pair of faces. Senthamarai recommended Kumarimuthu after seeing him in a stage play. That one recommendation turned into three films together.
• In Metti (1982), Senthamarai played the quiet, suffering wife while Kumarimuthu played the loud, abusive husband. He would improvise his shouting lines on set, and she would adjust her silences to match his rhythm. That push-and-pull made the domestic violence scenes feel uncomfortably real.
• During the shoot of Nandu (1981), Kumarimuthu would bring Senthamarai homemade snacks from his village every morning. She later said that gesture broke the ice between them — they were both nervous newcomers.
• Senthamarai once told a magazine: 'Kumarimuthu never let me feel like I was acting alone. He would whisper cues to me even when the camera wasn't on him.'
• Their third film together, Naan Ungal Rasigan (1985), was a disaster — 1/10 on most fan lists. But here's the thing: that film's failure made both of them swear off commercial masala movies. Senthamarai moved to character roles, Kumarimuthu went full-time into comedy. Their bad film changed both their careers.
