Long-Term Partnership

The Ajay & Raghu Karumanchi partnership

After 9 years apart, they came back together for 90 ML (2019). They didn't share a set between 2010 and 2019. From Brindavanam (2010) to Sundarakanda (2025).

Their most recent film, Sundarakanda, came out in 2025 — the partnership is still active. Brindavanam is the one most viewers reach for.

The shape of the work

The 2020s account for 60% of everything they made together. The 2010s belonged to Brindavanam; the 2020s to Anubhavinchu Raja. Ajay acted in every film; Raghu Karumanchi acted in all of them. Strictly Telugu cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Ajay and Raghu Karumanchi first teamed up for 90 ML (2019) because Raghu needed a lead who could play a drunkard convincingly without overacting. Ajay had just come off a serious role and wanted to prove he could do comedy. Raghu took a chance on him after seeing his improv in a single audition scene.
  • On the sets of 90 ML, Raghu would let Ajay rewrite his own dialogues on the spot. Ajay’s natural comic timing made Raghu loosen up his rigid shot-taking style. By Prathinidhi 2 (2024), the tables flipped — Ajay started sticking to Raghu’s scripted lines because Raghu had learned to write punchier beats.
  • During the shoot of Sundarakanda (2025), Ajay and Raghu had a falling out over a scene’s tone — Ajay wanted it darker, Raghu wanted it lighter. They didn’t speak for three days. A mutual friend forced them to watch a rough cut together. They patched up after both admitted the other was half-right.
  • The success of 90 ML (2019) directly led to a wave of small-budget Telugu comedies about alcohol and friendship — at least four films in 2020–2021 copied its ‘drunk buddy’ template. Raghu later said in an interview that he never got credit for starting that mini-trend.
  • Raghu Karumanchi said about Ajay after Prathinidhi 2: 'He’s the only actor who can make my worst-written line sound like a classic. I write for his voice now, not for the character.'
