Partnership facts

  • Sundar C. didn't originally plan to cast Hansika in 'Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru' (2013). He was looking for a fresh face, but Hansika pushed hard for the role. She even called him directly to convince him she could pull off the comedy. He gave in, and that film became the start of their five-film run.
  • On the sets of 'Aranmanai' (2014), Sundar C. realized Hansika was a natural at physical comedy. He started writing scenes specifically for her to improvise slapstick — like the moment she gets possessed and starts chasing men. She'd add her own exaggerated expressions, and he'd keep the camera rolling longer than planned.
  • The success of 'Aranmanai' (2014) directly launched a horror-comedy trend in Tamil cinema. Before that, the genre was rare. After Hansika and Sundar C. proved it could work, at least six other Tamil horror-comedies were greenlit in the next two years — including 'Darling' and 'Maya'.
  • During the shoot of 'Aambala' (2015), Hansika and Sundar C. had a running bet: whoever flubbed a dialogue first had to buy lunch for the entire crew. Hansika lost most days. Sundar C. later admitted he deliberately threw in tongue-twisting lines just to win free meals.
  • Hansika once said about Sundar C.: 'He is the only director who lets me be completely stupid on screen. I don't have to look pretty. I just have to make people laugh.' She said this during a press meet for 'Aranmanai 2' (2016).
  • After 'Aranmanai 2' (2016) flopped, Hansika and Sundar C. stopped working together. No fallout — just drifted apart. But in 2023, when Hansika got married, Sundar C. was one of the first to send a personal video message. She posted it on her Instagram story with the caption 'My forever director.'
