• Rajesh was already a star when he agreed to do Alaya Deepam (1984) only because Ilavarasi was cast opposite him. He had seen her in a small role and told the director he wouldn't sign unless she was the heroine.
• On the set of Sirai (1984), Ilavarasi would deliberately flub her lines to make Rajesh laugh during serious scenes. He'd then improvise a comeback that the director kept in the final cut. That's why their banter feels so natural.
• During the shoot of Chain Jayapaul (1985), Rajesh and Ilavarasi had a falling out over a missed call sheet. They didn't speak for three days. The director had to lock them in a makeup room until they sorted it out.
• The success of Alaya Deepam (1984) directly led to Ilavarasi being cast in her first solo lead role in a major production the next year. Rajesh had recommended her to the producer during a lunch break.
• Ilavarasi once said in a 1985 interview: 'Rajesh taught me how to cry on cue without glycerin. He would whisper a sad story in my ear just before the camera rolled. I never needed a second take after that.'
• They almost never worked together. Ilavarasi's mother initially refused to let her act opposite Rajesh because she thought he was 'too old and too famous' for her daughter. Rajesh personally visited their home to convince her.
