• Durai was a newcomer when he cast Vijayan in Pasi (1979). Vijayan was already a known face. Durai later said he picked Vijayan because he needed an actor who could cry on cue without glycerin — and Vijayan delivered that raw emotion in the film's most famous scene.
• On the sets of Oli Pirandhadhu (1980), Vijayan would often rewrite his own dialogues in the morning. Durai let him do it. The director said Vijayan's instinct for rural speech made the lines land harder than what was written.
• Pasi (1979) was the film that launched actress Shoba into the spotlight. She played the mother of Vijayan's character. Durai and Vijayan together chose her over more established names — and her performance became the film's emotional anchor.
• During the shoot of Mayil (1981), Vijayan and Durai shared a small room in a lodge near the location. They would stay up late discussing the next day's scenes. Durai later recalled that Vijayan never complained about the cramped space — he just wanted to talk cinema.
• Durai once said in an interview: 'Vijayan was the only actor who would call me at 2 AM to say he found a better way to say a line. I never got angry. I knew he was thinking about the film even in his sleep.'
