The Rati Agnihotri & Basu Chatterjee partnership

From Shaukeen (1981) to Pasand Apni Apni (1983). The played out closed with Pasand Apni Apni in 1983. It started with Shaukeen (1981).

The shape of the work

Rati Agnihotri acted in every film; Basu Chatterjee directed all of them. Strictly Hindi cinema — they never crossed industries together.

Partnership facts

  • Basu Chatterjee cast Rati Agnihotri in 'Shaukeen' (1981) after seeing her in a small role in 'Zakhmi Aurat'. He needed a young actress who could hold her own opposite three veteran comedians — Ashok Kumar, Utpal Dutt, and A.K. Hangal. Rati was just 20 and terrified, but Chatterjee bet on her anyway.
  • On the set of 'Shaukeen', Chatterjee never gave Rati a single line reading. Instead, he would whisper the emotional subtext of each scene — 'you're bored, but pretending to be polite' — and let her find the performance. She later said this freedom made her feel like a real actor for the first time.
  • Rati Agnihotri once said: 'Basu da never shouted. He'd just look at me with those sad eyes and say, 'Beta, thoda aur try karo.' That was worse than any yelling. I'd do twenty takes to get his nod.'
  • After 'Pasand Apni Apni' (1983) flopped, Chatterjee and Rati didn't speak for nearly a decade. Rati felt the film's failure was partly because he'd written a weak role for her. They only reconciled in the early 1990s when she called him to apologize for a rude remark she'd made in a magazine.
  • The success of 'Shaukeen' (1982) — a comedy about three old men chasing a young woman — directly inspired Hrishikesh Mukherjee to cast Rati in 'Rang Birangi' (1983). Mukherjee told Chatterjee: 'You found a way to make her funny without making her a clown. I need that.'
