• Hema Malini was the one who pushed for Girish Karnad to play the villain in Ratnadeep (1979). The director wanted a more commercial face, but Hema insisted Karnad's intensity would make the role unforgettable.
• On the set of Ratnadeep, Karnad would rehearse his lines in Kannada first, then translate them into Hindi on the spot. Hema, a trained dancer, matched his rhythm by timing her reactions to his pauses — they built every scene like a choreographed duet.
